Actually, what you're trying to do by chewing gum, and what you should be doing, is getting your ears to pop as quickly as possible. It's the pressure differential inside and outside your eardrums that causes the discomfort and the feeling that your ears are clogged. You want that pressure to equalize, and that's accomplished by popping your ears.
Sadly, the phenomena is unavoidable travelling at alititude.

How can you hate flying? Anyway, I have been on lots of plane trips and there is no way to keep your ears from popping. You can, though, doing things to help pop them quicker. Talk, chew gum, yawn, just move your jaw.

Chewing gum is really the best and easiest way. You can also try holding your mouth tightly closed, hold your nose, and then try to blow hard but without allowing any air to escape. Sometimes that will pop your ears back to normal.

All you have to do is keep swallowing about 4 or 5 times and then it goes away. No need to chew gum or anything else.
