Yes, the dog can die. The reason for this is that, for example, if you have a beagle that gets pregnant by a German Shepherd, the puppies may be the size of Shepherd pups, and that would be too large for the beagle to carry safely. It could possibly tear her uterus. She will then die of internal bleeding.
The best thing to do, is get her into the vet and have her fixed. When they do that, they can abort the puppies. I know it sounds terrible, but they may die anyway, and take their momma with them. Good luck to you!

Hi,
Is the dog already pregnant? If so you still have some options. You could have her aborted with a shot if she is just pregnant. If she is further along you could have an abortion - spay. Or you could just let her carry the puppies and watch her closely. It is possible that she will do ok, but she is at an increased risk of problems with having a big dog for the daddy. You might end up having to have a C-section for her. And the worst case senario is that she could die from puppies that are too big.
Just because the dad was larger doesn't mean she will have problems. But the risk is much greater for problems especially if there was a big size difference between Mom and Dad.
I hope everything works out ok.

If the size discrepancy is a big one, yes, it can kill the mother to attempt giving birth to pups from a much larger breed. When mixing big and little dog DNA, be sure it's the male who's the little half of the equation, and you can cross breed them, safely. If your small ***** is pregnant now from a large breed dog, have your vet perform an abortion, and have it fixed as soon as it is well enough to undertake that procedure, unless the vet is able to perform both at once safely. THAT I cannot hazard a guess, I haven't the schooling for it, nor is the dog in front of me to examine if I did. A vet would decide that on a case by case basis, because there are many variables to consider.

Are you talking about breeding the same breed, just the female is smaller than the male? Like a yorkie or a lab? If you are planning to breed pure bred dogs, please research it first. Size is more important in smaller breeds and a larger male might cause you to be paying out a lot of money on a c-section.
One of the larger breeds that will always require a c-section is the bulldog.
If your dog is a mixed breed, then don't breed it at all, there are lots of those out there for free. It serves no practical purpose. Just get it fixed and save it from ever getting testicle cancer or breast cancer.
I use to bath a 1/2 German shep 1/2 dach, and dach was the mom, sooooo anything can happen!!!!!

A small dog can indeed die from a puppy that is too big. It simply cannot fit through the birth canal and will kill the mother. You can prevent this by having a c-section if the dog is already pregnant. And don't try breeding again, but if you must, next time do not let your little dog breed with a big one!

It depends on whether your wanting to have pups or not, Ive seen small to medium size dogs have pups from a hound . It depends on the actual size of the female if she is small to miniature then please don't put the animal thru it, and how big is big, I'd have her spayed that way you wouldn't be wondering all the time, but remember, It cannot be undone when ya get her spayed, so if you want her to have pups, make sure its with a breed you know will have the same size pups.

Yup it's true. Big dog w/ small dog you will end up with puppies of both sizes.. You can prevent the dog from dying by having her spayed.. If you already made a huge mistake and bred her then you'll want to talk to your vet and have him ready when you need to take her for a c-section.

its not that they cant have the pups, it can be much more dangerous for the mom, if the pups are too large for her, and might require a c- section. None of us can predict that the moms wont die each time they deliver pups, it is a risk we all take, and each time, just as humans do. I would certainly stay within a few pounds difference.

They can, not sure what you can do about it. Other then the obvious of hacving your pet fixed. We had a very small dog who a large German Shepard breed. Had pups, all were fine, mom too. Talk to your vet and watch her closely when she gets close to due date.
