My dog had to have eye surgery ($1,000) due to my friends cat. It happened while she was watching my puppy at her house (I was out of state). She took her to an emergency vet, where she had to pay $400 upfront for the eye surgery and medicine. I paid the remaining $300 plus more medicines and my dog still needs more surgery and still may lose her eye completely. She now wants me to pay her for the $400 she's out when this all happened because of her cat and while the puppy was in her care. I understand accidents happen but I do not believe I should have to pay for her mistake (especially when I will be spending much more than $400 by the time this is over with). I never asked her to pay for anything else (although sometimes I think I should have!) and feel she should be responsible for more than $400. Isn't she LEGALLY required to pay for at least half? What actions do I take as the pet owner and what is she legally responsible for?

Did you pay her to watch the pup for you? If she did it as a favor, you may be stuck. She can claim you knew she had a cat. (You DID, right??) This wasn't negligence or deliberate. But it looks like it just cost you a friend on top of the money.
Good luck to your pup.

well i would say, it was YOUR choice to leave your dog with her knowing that she had a cat. Also, yes it was her responsibility to take the dog if anything were to happen to the doctor, which she did. She paid for it, and thats all she should have to do. Now you have your dog... shes not a part of the situation anymore. If you take the fact that it was HER cat out of the picture, and just think that it was A cat than really she owes nothing. Its not her dog. She paid her amount due while she was the guardian of the dog and now your back and its your dog again. Yeah i know, bad situation, but these things happen.

That she took the puppy at all to any care at all is to her credit.
She had no responsibility to do that.
Cats and kittens do as they do.
Perhaps if you had instructed her to keep the puppy crated, (except while under her visual and strict supervision,) then perhaps, (perhaps) but only perhaps if a paper were signed to that effect and the injury occurred as she dishonored the agreement.
Sorry, but the responsibility of owning a pet rests on your shoulders.
Did you offer or agree to pay her for her time and care of the puppy?
good pet care is time consuming and takes very conscientious effort to do well.
no small claims court would satisfy your case.
research it.
at any rate, don't let it cost you a friendship, what goes around comes around and you may need the same amount of charity and understanding from her one day, its what concrete friendships are made of.

Well.. How much do you value your friendship with this person.. Cause I can guarantee you, if you sue her for the money, that you won't be friends any longer.. I say don't pay her the $400.. But forget about asking her for the money for the surgery.. Forgive and forget and lesson learned, don't trust people to care for your pets..

Call your attorney! This can be a lawsuit, you are not in any way responsible for what happened to your dog, so you shouldn't in any way have to pay the bill. She should have considered her cat and schedule when she accepted the responsibility of watching your dog. She is, in fact, legally required to pay!

hmmm, I am not too sure of the law, but I bet a small claims court will hold her partially responsible for the payments. Doesn't sound like much of a friend either. Spread the word to other would be victims to avoid her unsafe "pet sitting". And if some idiot tells you it is natural for cats to fight dogs, they should go rub salt. Your friend had an unsafe environment for your dog. PERIOD!

This is a civil matter and you can sue her in small claims court. I would get all the paperwork together and sue her. The dog was under her care and it was her cat that injured the dog. So she is responsible for all costs.

that is a civil court matter. if you call your local court you should be able to find out how much you are allowed to sue for and what she would potentialy be liable for.
it's kinda like a judge judy sort of thing.
best of luck with it. the judge will more than likely make her pay for the bills to the max allowed by that state.

I think she should pay for atleast a little more, but again, the only other option is taking her to court, but I dont thaink that would do any good either....
