There is a reason that dogs are at a shelter. Very often they have a medical problem that the owner would not deal with or else they have behavior/temperament issues. It is NEVER a good idea to adopt a shelter dog unless you really, really, really know a lot about canine behavior and can spot potential problems. Some shelter dogs are wonderful. But some should have been euthanized before they ended up at a shelter in the first place. And using the "abuse excuse" is irresponsible. Temperament is a genetic trait. Dominant dogs were born that way not made that way.

If this is an aggressive dominant dog then it should be destroyed. It doesn't matter if it is cute or anything else. There are hundreds of dogs that need homes. Mean ones should be destroyed for the safety of the general public. Don't feel guilty if you have to make that decision. It is the responsible thing to do.

Has this happened since you got him or is it something new? If it is new you may want to have him checked by the Vet he could be in pain from something. If this is happening since you got him, I would enlist the help of a behavioralist. What type of situation did this dog come from? Was he a stray? Was he abused? If so by whom, men or women? Does it seem to be children, adults, men, or women, or all the above he snaps at? When he snaps you need to discipline him as that behavior shouldn't be tolerated. I don't mean hit him for it though. Roll him in submission. When you release him make him sit and allow people to pet him. Try giving them food to give to him. He will associate their hand then with a positive thing. He may be associating it with something negative that happened to him. Take him for walks and take treats with you. Stop people and ask them to feed him the treat. He will soon learn. He needs some retraining it sounds like.

Try sending him to obedience school, I know it's expensive but it's a controlled enviroment where he'll be introduced to other animals while under the supervision of trained professionals. It's not easy to break these habits in the home. You could also try hiring an "in-the-home" training services, these are usually cheaper (by the hour) and they'll focus on that specific problem.

Sounds like your dog has fear aggression...Did you ask about potential behavior problems when you adopted him? You need to consult an animal behaviorist to find ways to keep him from biting before it gets worse. Keep him on a lead at all times when he's outside, and limit his interactions with visitors till you get the behavior under control.

awwww, sounds like you have a cranky dog. There are muzzles that allow the dog to drink, try that, I would. Before your dog hurts someone. I rescued a mastiff a few years ago who bite 2 people!!!! I did not raise him, but to keep other safe, I muzzled him. He got used to it, and could still drink. I removed it when he ate of course. And if anyone tells you that it is cruel, they are ignorant fools.

You need to find out how long he was in the shelter and if it was awhile what the routine is there. 3 months isn't that long, the animal sounds like it is terrified of all the changes and hasn't bonded with anyone in your house. try making one person the only interaction with the dog for love, food and attention for awhile and spending lots of time with him.

Have you considered that this dog might be out of control because it was never taught good behavior? Enroll yourself and the dog in a good obedience class and learn about dog behavior, how to teach your dog and how to correct bad behavior. If left to itself it will learn bad behavior as you have discovered.

Hmmm, sounds like a case for the Dog Whisperer.

Actually I think he covered this very issue.

Couple shots of fresh lemon in its mouth when he snaps should cure him over a small period of time. It will hate the taste and relate to it when he snaps. Works great if he barks alot too.
