I've never sang by myself before. The musical has tap dancing and i know how to tap dance...but i don't know if i'm good enough. I want don't want a main role, i just want to be in the back. I've auditioned before, and i have been in shows. Has anybody auditioned before or have any good advice for a beginer?

First off, break a leg!

I'm not sure how your auditions will work but it seems when I've auditioned for shows, its been myself and the director and maybe the accopaniest.

I just imagine myself looking in the mirror singing and just look like that I'm having the time of my life!

For music, find something you're comfortable with, prefreably no pop song or anything modern. Personally for a song, I'd do '42nd Street' the lyrics are easy to learn and it works since its a tap show.

I usually have the opposite of your problem which is I can sing but I'm not a great dancer.

At most auditions you can note on your audition form that you prefer a chorus role but I would suggest that you say you'll accept any role. The director won't try to force you into a lead role if he/she doesn't think you can do it. Take a simple song even sing Happy Birthday and let them be the judge. If the show has a fair amount of tap in it chances are there will be a dance chorus and often you don't have to be a strong singer to be in the dance chorus, and that sounds like exactly the opportunity you need to boost your confidence and get some experience.

Pick a song from the show that you feel comfortable singing and tapping to. Put together a routine and go for it! My 9 year old just did her first summer theater show and was very nervous about the audition. The show was on Saturday and she had a blast! It was really a huge boost to her confidence. She's kind of like you, more of a dancer than a singer but after doing this show...she's singing all the time now! Try not to let your "shyness" get in the way by getting into character. Is your character shy?? No way! Use your acting skills to act your way through the audition, it will really help. Break a leg!

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Directors hate to see someone uncomfortable on the stage, so DON'T SHOW IT! Make sure you feel confident. you can do this by choosing a song that is within your range and practicing it with a piano or listening to it off a CD, so you can learn to stay on key during the audition. Auditions are no big deal. If you don't get the part, don't sweat it. And never tell yourself that you may not be a good tap dancer or singer or anything. Never try to bring yourself down, as easy as it may be (We all do it). Just believing in yourself is the biggest peice of advice I can give. Being confident when you walk into that audition will show the director that you can be on stage without a problem. Break a leg!!

How long before the audition ? Choose a song that u know well, and get some friends/family to listen to u. When u go for the audition, explain that u are looking for a place in the chorus and do the best tap dance u can. They will know that everybody is nervous, so take a deep breath and give it ur best shot. Hope this helps, and all the best.

I've done tons of auditions before and my best audition was when I relaxed. I admit I was still nervous, but I knew I would do ok. If you get a main role, either go with the flow, because the director likes you, or talk to the director or producer and explain that you don't really want that role.
