Why do they take like an hour to fill out with like a million weird questions instead of just being like the paper application? Especially since for the most part it's a waste of time because very few who apply will even get hired (or even interviewed), which makes the information they're asking useless.

It shows you have enough discipline to complete a laborious task and gives them more "tie breakers" prior to calling for interviews.

Sometimes they just seem long, because what fits in a two page paper application might take 10 screens.

It's a good way to collect marketing and other info about you. People will often be willing to provide more info online than they would in writing. You are giving them more chances to screen you out. only fill in the essential items and let them contact you if they're interested in your resume.
