My dad had been ill for 4 days with a sickness and diarrhoea bug. He last ate on friday afternoon. He has tried to eat after that but it is coming straight back up. Is it normal for this to last this long? Im getting worried as he had lost 3/4 of a stone in weight.

Myself and my 2 young children had that in March. We had sickness and diarrhoea for a week. We did not see the doctor and discovered later that we possibly had the Winter Vomiting Illness. I would recommend you call the doctor out to him.

Make sure he drinks plenty. The loss of so much weight so quickly implies he may be dehydrating. I vaguely remember having diarrhoea for a week or so, but that was as a child. I imagine the implications/causes can be completely different for adults - especially the elderly. It's best your dad sees a doctor. Don't be shy of calling the doctor out if it's difficult to get your dad there. Best of luck - I hope he's better soon.

Call a doctor out to see him this sounds like some serious form of food poisoning.
You must keep him hydrated give him lots of fluids, it might sound weird but cola (not diet)is good for this as it contains sugars and salts that will help replace that lost in the illness.

He sounds pretty bad off to me. Your biggest issue with this illness is dehydration. Try feeding him chicken broth(not chicken noodle soup-- the noodles are too rich) or Sprite and see if he'll keep that down. These are mild enough for most people to keep down and should give his body the much needed nutrients and fluids for him to get through this. If he can't keep either of these down I would consider bringing him in to the hospital so they can put him on an IV and rehydrate him that way.

get him to a doc I myself became ill after a take away curry did not take much notice just kept on popping tabs to stop the SH**S but it did not clear up then it became worse I had stomach pains that felt like somebody was running into the room & kicking me in the stomache then good sense took over and I grudgingly phoned the night doctor who came out to see me and he told me how stupid I was for not going to my G P as it turned out that he suspected food poisoning & gave me a little pot to SH** into and was told to take it up to the local hospital lab next day in the end it turned out to be Salmonella poisoning ! in the end I had two months off work and lost 2 stone in weight which I have never put back on & even after it went away I felt terrible for about six months got sent home from work once cos I looked so ill !!

well you can take my advice or you can leave it b/c i dont have a medical degree YET but im working on it...if hes had a fever and you've given him medication for it and it doesnt really help go to the hospital they might have to give him a suppository to help him keep things down...i also have to ask if he can keep fluid down if he cant go to the hospital b/c he might become dehydrated and hopefully you and your family are tring to feed him things like soup instead of "whole foods" and just a tip to try and relieve a fever eat ice chips or something cold like a popsicle maybe he will keep that down you can also try to feed him some Jello not only is it good but it wont be harsh on his stomach....but like i said i dont have a nursing degree yet but im studying for it now so best of luck to you and your father and your family and i hope everything works out well

Ring NHS Direct immediately. He may need rehydrating but at the very least needs to be seen by a health professional.
Good Luck
