It would be against the law to ban someone from a public school in the US with either of those names. However, If my last name was Satan, I would probably keep it. I mean, it worked for NHL player Miroslav Satan, didn't it?

I read that today. Personally, I would change my name. I can understand why a Catholic school would not want a little boy named Max Hell. It would be disruptive. Kids are kids, and his name would be a joke in every class and you would have a hard time making it past roll call.

Austrian heritage, suppose it could have been worse, they could have given him a first name like Adolph, or even Osama.
Common sense dictates here.
Would you name your child Adolph or Osama ?
Get real.
Translate your name, Hell is supposed to mean Bright in Austrian, then change your last name to Bright.
What the Hell ?

No, there's a hockey player named Miroslav Satan. I think the guy does everything he can to look like the Devil.

I'm guessing it's not the boy's fault his last name is what it is... Sounds like ignorance.

No I would not because the child don't choose his/her name,so it's not their fault.
