The ten commandments are for the Christian and hebrew oriented churches who are willing to place their faith under the LAW-The 10 Commandments, its ordinances, its tithes, its sabbaths, its festivities, etc. Their Prophet is MOSES who is the LAW-GIVER. In the new testament or under the new dispensation, it is called grace dispensation because THE LORD GOD appeared in human image to man in the person of THE LORD JESUS CHRIST who brought grace and truth ; and Christians who are willing to place their faith under GRACE are called under the grace dispensation. Thus, they do not have laws, like sabbaths, tithing laws, festivities but everything becomes voluntary in nature to the faithfuls. Their Prophet is THE LORD JESUS CHRIST who is the highest prophet called THE ALFA AND THE OMEGA. On one hand, the Prophet to the Muslim peoples is Mohammad and to the enlightened is Buddha and Joseph Smith to the coward christians, the latter day saints cowering in fear in the cities instead of looking for their martyrdom and shed their blood like the King of the Saints-THE LORD JESUS CHRIST that Christian churches will be nourished by their blood poured into the ground. THANKS GOD; FEAR GOD; GLORIFY GOD; HONOR GOD; LOVE GOD AND WORSHIP GOD. Pls visit my website-THEGOODNEWSOFTHEKINGDOM@yahoogroups.com

1) Using the Lord's name is when you use God' name in a way that may belittle him or offend him.
2) You are correct about the Sabbath being on Saturday. But the Sabbath was set aside for the Israelites to have a day of rest, then on the Lord's Day they were to worship which followed the day after the Sabbath in our case is on Sunday. This is why most churches worship on Sunday instead of Saturday because Saturday is the Sabbath and was meant for rest not worship.
3) Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor means simply that you shouldn't tell a lie to anyone.
4)Neighbor is meaning anyone you come in contact with no the just the person you live beside
5) The thou shall not covet your neighbor's things is simply saying that you should be more focused on your possessions not someone elses. You should worry about you things and managing them instead of worrying about "keeping up with Jones'".
One thing I want you to know is that you can learn from thes commandments and try to live by them but remember that these were formed for the Israelites not for the New Testament Church. Read the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5) to learn about the new commandments given to the Church by Jesus.

Taking the Lord's name in vain means misuing His name, using as a swear word or demeaning it such as OMG! or JC!
Scripture says that God will not hold guiltless those who misuse His name. His name is HOLY, we are to treat it that way.
God made the Sabbath for man...it is a day of rest. We are to work 6 days and rest on one. The DAY it happens is not really important. Saturday is the Jewish Sabbath, and Sunday is the Christian Sabbath to commemorate the Resurrection.
To bear false witness against your neighbor is to accuse him of something or lie about him, knowing that he didn't do anything.
To lie with your neighbor is to have sex with your neighbor.
To covet is to want something that you don't have so much that it consumes you or keeps you from doing what you should do, which is to love your neighbor. To covet your neighbor's wife, means to lust after her...
The ten commandments were written to let man KNOW that he needed God. No one can keep them, and if you are guilty of one you are guilty of all. God gave the ten commandments to know that we need Jesus.
Jesus summed up the ten commandments in Matthew 22:35-37, when the Jewish leaders asked Him which was the most important commandment.
He replied, the two commandments are this:
First, love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and strength, and the second is this, love your neighbor AS yourself. The law and the prophets (ten commandments) hang on these two.

1. Not to use the name of God in vain means not to use His name while cussing
2.Sabbath is Saturday and a day of rest.
Sunday is the Lord's day. It is the day Jesus resurrected, established the Eucharist and most often visited with the Apostles before His Ascension into heaven
3.Do not lie or gossip about your neighbors , friends, family, acquaintances
4.coveting means yearning or strong desire to be just like your neighbor, have what he has
5. The 10 Commandments are the laws in which God wants us to live our lives.

1)taking the Lord's name in vain is to promise something in His name, knowing that it isn't true. Or to curse using His name.
2)The Sabbath is the one day of rest each week. It can be saturday or sunday.
3)I believe that Christians just made Sunday Sabbath because that's the day Jesus rose.
4)Bearing false witness means to falsely accuse your neighbor of a crime. It's a special kind of lieing.
5)Coveting is to want, to lust after, something that isn't yours. It leads to adultery, stealing, lieing, all kinds of bad things.

Lords name in vain: Don't swear an oath, with God as your witness, knowing that you are going to lie.
Sabbath: Most, but not all, Christian denominations celebrate the sabbath on Sunday because that is the day that Jesus rose from the dead.
False witness: Don't spread lies about your neighbor. I take it to mean that we are all neighbors, not just the guy next door.
Not to covet: Don't try to, or wish to, keep up with the Jones'
That is my take on it.

- Take the Lord's name is vain means to curse God (or something like that)
- Sabbath - doesn't necessarily mean Saturday or Sunday or a specific day like that. It just means take a rest one day of the week.
- false witness - you are correct, it means don't lie. But "neighbor" here means anybody, so don't lie to anybody.
- covet means wanting something so bad, especially something you shouldn't have. eg. somebody else's wife.

I am an atheist and I can't stand Richard Darwkins. Who the hell does this guy think he is the Pope? 10 commandment: question everything including darwkins interest in atheism which imo is simply about money and if not I would worry about his mental heath quite frankly. Much like you Mr Poster , don't criticize religion if you're being equally pious.

1) to take the lord's name in vain means to "swear by God" not say gawd damnit..rather to say something like "In God's name today the sky will be orange" ie: you're speaking for God and saying something that won't happen. so you're taking his name in vain by saying something in vain by your own vanity. nothing to do with swearing or curse words.
2) the sabbath is the day of rest. yes it's saturday many celebrate on sunday. to each his own.
3) means not to give false testimony in a court which would lead to a false conviction. goes for everyone not just your neighbor.
4) covet, be jealous of to the point of obsession or lust. you can look at your neighbor's wife and think she's attractive. but to the point of obsession is wrong. or to lust etc...
