The major difference is that one is designed to be fired single handed, while the other one is a shoulder supported, two-hand design. Hence the: "Handgun;" and the rifle intended to be shot from the shoulder.
Both pistol/revolvers and rifles are designed to fire short, long and long rifle .22 ammo. Some are even designed to fire .22 Magnum ammo and some revolvers only require a simple cylinder change out to fire either .22 or .22 Magnum ammo.
Best.

the 1st around invented replaced into in simple terms referred to as the 22 Rimfire. Then the adult males who invented it made the case a splash longer and known because it the 22 long, and renamed the different one 22 short. in addition they invented a good longer one which they referred to as the 22 greater advantageous long, yet that did no longer sell properly and is not any longer around to any extent further. (in addition they invented some great-short rounds like the 22 CB and 22 BB) They then invented the 22 long Rifle which replaced into immensely usual and made all the different rounds in certainty out of date. you will on uncommon activities stumble on a handgun or rifle which will purely shoot 22 shorts or 22 longs. besides the undeniable fact that ninety 9.9999999999% of '22' weapons are chambered in 22 long Rifle, yet may additionally fireplace 22 long and 22 short accurately. that's ideal to the two handguns and to rifles. be conscious, besides the undeniable fact that, that no longer all weapons will FEED the shorter 22 short and 22 long reliably. Revolvers will, bolt action weapons will, yet many semi-automobile pistols, semiauto rifles, pump rifles, and lever action rifles won't. I loaded up the magazine of my Ruger 10/22 with 22 longs...and that i had to disassemble it to get them out as they have been too short to pop their nostril up suitable. FOR THE SAKE OF COMPLETENESS purely: In concept in case you had a gun in 22 greater advantageous long it ought to fireplace 22 long Rifle, 22 long, and 22 short (and 22 CB and 22 BB too). besides the undeniable fact that right this moment on the cabinets there are a number of 22 long Rifle 'intense velocity' rounds that i wouldn't have confidence in an 22 greater advantageous long. I in simple terms need to make it clean that the 22 greater advantageous long, 22 long Rifle, 22 long, 22 short, 22 CB, and 22 BB are multi function 'kin' This 'kin' isn't an identical 'kin' because of the fact the 22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, nor the 22 Winchester Rimfire, nor the 22 Remington Rimfire..this is yet another kin, and are not compatable with 'universal 22s' except greater advantageous aspects swapped in on the weapons. ultimately...you do no longer ought to difficulty with the decimal factor once you're conversing approximately 22s.

well. id say under the law the biggest issue is concealability. One is large and cumbersome and usually unmeneuvarable.
one is small, and can be concealed in a pocket, and for example, be taken to school or other places by children to commit crimes. and its not really the dirrence between a 22 rifle and a 22 handgun. its just the diffrence between a rifle and handgun. if a person had an unlicensed Ruger .45 and a Ruger .22 and commited a murder with it, i believe it would have the same penalty....

Your question is probably related to caliber of ammunition.
The identical ammunition is used in either.
22 comes in Short, long, and long rifle (22LR). Some firearms are able to use any version, but this is not likely with current manufactured firearms, with the exception of revolvers.
22Long is obsolete, very hard to find.
22 short is rare, few firearms use it. It is not less expensive than 22LR. It has the advantage of being somewhat quieter.
22LR is the standard. Note that modern semiautomatic 22 firearms will require the 22LR level of recoil to function properly.

the caliber being equal [pistols and rifles both can chamber .22 short, long, and long rifle rounds], the biggest difference is barrel length and cartridge holding capacity.
most revolvers hold at most 9 rounds, whereas the rifle can
load 10 or more.

Most .22 handguns will shoot only shorts and longs....and are used for close range.
A .22 rifle will shoot several sizes of .22 bullets, shorts, longs, long rifles, and magnum shells. A rifle will shoot further distance than a handgun.
I have been shot with a .22 rifle, and believe me, it hurts like hell.
For some reason, I survived the shooting, and I'm still here. Not everybody that gets shot, lives to tell about it.
