Yes they are, but it's not that difficult to avoid.

Cats can carry a species of tapeworm that can cause a disease called toxoplasmosis, but it's mostly only harmful to pregnant woman or more precisely, unborn foetuses.Toxoplasmosis can be fatal in people with weak immune systems, but healthy adults don't really show symptoms.

Humans can become infected by round or tapeworms, but basic hygiene should prevent this, and of course regular worming will prevent them becoming pregnant in the first place.

We can pick up some by contact, yes. Roundworms (they look like spagetti in the poop) and tapeworm (looks like white or cream grains of rice) are two.

The best way to get rid of them is to take a fecal sample to the vet to find out what type the cat has, because different medicines are used for different kinds and giving the wrong kind can hurt or stress the cat.

Wash your hands after scooping the litter box, that should be enough, but definately get the cat's poop checked. They get these things from fleas and by eating prey they catch outside. It's much easier treating the problem in the cat than to go to the doctor and have them treat you!

It's a fact of life with outdoor cats, your chances of getting anything are small if you're not handling the actual poops, but still, it's something easily fixed.

Yes...you can catch worms from cats. Keep them away from your face and wash your hands after cleaning cat box. Get some dewormer from vet.

You can also catch diseases from cat feces if you don't wash after cleaning the cat box. But most humans have already been in contact and have some immunity. Pregnant women should refrain from cleaning cat litter.
