Not all Christians shun free thought. I am one that doesn't. Actually, I would be called an atheist by some Christians by some of my beliefs. I am not offended by what others say about Christians. I think the Christians who are easily offend and are eager to jump down peoples throats are Christians that are not secure in their religion. But you have to admit it, some people do lump all Christians together. They think because one Christian believes the Earth is only 6000 years old, that all Christians believe that. Not all do. In fact, I have no problem with evolution either. I am glad you are able to be honest. Not all Christians will give you trouble for that.

Atheist is a fine word. I am proud to be an atheist. But if you don't want to be called an atheist, just state that you believe in God and Jesus and don't let it bother you that people call you an atheist. It's their ignorance, not yours.

It's not as if "atheist" is a bad word. Personally, I am proud to call myself an atheist.
Generally, it is us atheists who rail most strongly against the idiocy in the Bible. So, it is natural for others to assume you are one if you do so. If you aren't an atheist and are offended, for some reason, when called one, then just state your beliefs (or lack thereof) up front.

because the Bible isn't a lot of malarkey, the Bible is Gods word , so by saying that its malarkey, your "putting down" God, therefore making them think you might be an atheist

Uh, if you don't believe in God, you are an atheist. Whether or not that is the truth is a different question.

Perhaps it is because the uber-religious crowd tends to be as challenged in their understanding of language as they are in their understanding of other things....
