Ok, when I was a little girl, I had long curly hair that went down almost to my butt.

My mother cut it when I was 10 and it's never gotten back to that length.

I want it back.

On top of that, I've colored, hightlighted, straightened.. .blah, blah.

For the past year + I've used heat protection stuff when I flat iron, I straighten it less often, and I never ever blow dry (never have).

I'd say the bottom, oh, 4-5 inches are split and dry. When it's curly (and full of de-frizzing goop) you can't even tell I have split ends. When it's straight, I have to put extra frizzy stuff in it then it looks fine for a long while.

My question is, I can't bear to cut off all the split ends at once. I don't really have a face for short hair. So I've been trimming off an inch every 3 months, hot oil treatments and deep conditioning each once a week.

Think I can get my hair back to perfect condition this way? I want to grow it out loooong like it was soo many years ago. Thx!

A tip I read once in Cosmo or Glamour (or something like that) really worked for me. I had long straight hair and had layered it...as I was trying to grow it out, the shorter layers developed split ends (I also did the bleaching, perming, coloring, hot styling thing!). I could cut off the long ends, but to get the shorter ones, I had to let them keep layering it...seemed to defeat the purpose!

The tip was this...take a two inch section of your hair and twist it like a rope. When you do this, the shorter ends will stick out of the rope...using good hair scissors, clip off a 1/4 inch of the ends that are sticking out (you're just trying to cut off the split part). Do your entire head then repeat the process every month or so...it wasn't as quick as cutting your entire head, but this method made my split ends less noticeable and my hair grew a lot faster (by the way, I totally stopped having it cut at a salon...they always cut off too much...I had my mom trim the longest ends every two or three months...she only took off a half inch or less so I wasn't constantly cutting off my new growth.

...and don't forget to use a good conditioner. Nexus Emergencee really worked for me...I discovered it when a stylist refused to perm my hair because he said it was like straw and would all fall out. I had it done in the salon at first (so I could get the heat to make it penetrate better), but I eventually bought a small bonnet dryer so I could do it at home. Follow the bottle instructions and finish with a dab of Humectress massaged in to the ends of your hair (leave it in) and you'll see instant and long term results! My stylist was able to perm my hair in just two months after weekly emergencee treatments!

Sorry sweetie... that's not giong to work. You are on the right track, but unfortunately those split ends are going to be the death of your hair. A split end is like a run in a stocking. Once it starts, it will go all the way to the top. Unless of course you do something to stop it. With a run you would put clear polish above the run. With a split end you must cut it about the split. If you go ahead and cut off all the split ends now, and continue the trimming process every three months, I promise by this time next year your hair will have grown at least 6-8 inches!

I think you really need to cut all the split ends off and then continue what you are doing and trimming and it will grow and get healthy. I have been trying to make my hair healthy too and cutting that off will make your hair grow.
