Needs to be compact, I travel A LOT, I like good quality photos... you know not grainy or obviously digitized, I'd like it to be rechargeable. Naturally there's the issue of cost, but I'll figure something out... SO yeah, compact, lightweight, decent memory, good photos, durable...

I would suggest the same as the first answer, a FujiFilm Finepix. They are SUPERB cameras. I have had two of them, a small pocket size one for vacations, and my big one, a Finepix s9000 that I use for photography for the Web.

However, I would also suggest going to CNET.Com for reviews and unbiased reviews. Try this link:

You can search by price, resolution or Mfgr. After you find one you like, go to BeachCamera.com and see if they have it. They have the best prices on the net and are HIGHLY reputable. (No, I don't work for them!) Just don't buy from a local store like Best Buy, they WAY overcharge. For example, My FinePix s9000 was $499 at Best Buy, but only $310 at Beach Camera.

Don't quite know what you mean by compact. If you mean tiny such as subcompact the following is not. A high quality camera is Canon PowerShot A630. Very good on AA rechargeable batteries, will give you an excellent 8X10. Has auto and manual controls. 4X optical zoom, 8 megapixels.
As of today Beach Camera has it for $182- according to Website dpreview.com
PS you asked about durable. ANY camera dropped at the wrong angle, and you'll be buying yourself another one.

Even though I personally own this ultra compact camera, I would still like to highly recommend the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L10 for the following reasons:

1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time;
2. Has a 3x optical zoom;
3. Takes "continuous" 2 frames per second "action/sports" images;
4. Has macro feature for close-ups of small objects focused under 6 inches;
5. The flash setting for "red-eye" correction is on the navigator wheel and not within a submenu;
6. It's very small and light;
7. Uses inexpensive SD memory cards - a 2 gig card sells for $19 at samys.com;
8. The digital video feature takes wonderful "sound" videos which are noise free. It records the piano very well with it's built-in microphone;
9. It comes with a USB 2.0 transfer cable which you connect to your USB computer port;
10. Has tripod mount on bottom of camera;
11. And the price is a mere $119 [sold at Samy's Camera - samys.com, and Staples.com.]

Good luck!

Casio Z75 or Z1050 is a great choice, nice and thin, lightweight, shoots photos and video with sound. Easy to use controls and a 2.5" screen to view.
