Excellent question. What you mean is "why does assimilate automatically mean "acting like white Christians".
The same people who advocate the same of non-white immigrants would never think of "assimilating".

When I have seen the word assimilate used lately, it isn't meaning everyone acting the same... The word assimilate is being directed at the illegals crossing the border and not even attempting to follow our laws, learn english, and our traditions and customs as country.... If you move out of this country to any other country, you would have to atleast learn enough of the official language to get by, and learn laws and traditions of that country. I mean we have some illegals who have been here 30 years and don't know any more english than they did when they first came. Why should a country that is already established change it's ways to accomodate people who aren't even supposed to be here?

"assimilate" is a polite (not so polite if you think about it) way of saying, "DON'T COST US MONEY BY DROPPING OUR PROPERTY VALUES!" or "DON'T MAKE US LOOK BAD BY PUTTING ON AIRS AND ACTING SUPERIOR!"
Fortunately, you don't have to assimilate.
Black neighbors DO expect white people to assimilate. I've experienced it.
If it also fortunate that the neighbors don't have to remain silent and accept your lack of assimilation.
They have free speech and the right to assembly (or lack of at your house or with you), should they choose to respond to your "way of life".
It's called freedom.
Assimilate. It's a good word. Only place we wouldn't need it is in a world where either you got what you wanted completely and everyone did whatever they wanted at the expense of whomever they chose, or you lost what you wanted completely and we all became nice little robots.
I like our world, better.
Yes, I'm taking it to extremes. Please don't mistake my examples for this person's reasonable post. I hate it when answers try to say "Is this what you are saying?" He isn't saying anything of the sort. I'm just pointing out where the line of thought could lead if it were actually done.
Oh, I've been on all sides of this argument and done all sides. I've assimilated, watched others assimilate or refuse to and fought both, and I've refused to assimilate.
Like I said, I love freedom.

Assimilate lol. If a white family moves into a black neighborhood and assimilated to the black American culture the blacks will be pissed off... and vice versa. OH, and whites and blacks in America are both American, but there are huge differences culturally... America is not a place that you can just say "OH, that is the American culture" no culture has a lot to do with Ethnicity... you shouldn't say that because I am white I have just a plain white American culture, but you do... like Irish and Danish people have the same culture, ha! I guess we shouldn't say there is just one black American culture either 'cause I am sure that people from certain parts of Africa celebrate different things than people from other parts of Africa or Haiti. But to make it easy... there is a general White American culture, a general Black American culture, a general Asian American culture, and Hispanic or Latino American culture, and many more. If white people try to act black it is insulting to the blacks same goes for all other ethnicities. Don't try to be someone you are not because a lot of times it looks moer disrespectful than like assimilation, and don't expect others to change for you... at least in America... now you go to another country and make sure not to do anything considered normal in America but that is extremely offensive to them... that's a good portion of assimilation. Don't be rude!
I say everyone in the country just needs to speak one language, or 3 langauges. Its not fair to say that everyone should learn English and Spanish, and ignore the French Canadians to the north... so Either English or all three. Other than that, it is stupid. One of the reasons I like America is because of the diversity of culture. If everyone assimilates to act like everyone else we lose the good food, beautiful clothes, fancy music, interesting holidays, etc that we have gained from all the other cultures that enter America.
You know, in my Sociology class a few semesters ago we had a debate about if America was full of culture or the death of culture. People who want all others to assimilate fully into American "culture" are people who are advocates for America being the place where cultures go to die, when really it was found, partly to be a place where all cultures can survive and thrive together peacefully.

First off your question was very racist. Secondly, you don't even know what assimilate means. Here is the definition:
2. To incorporate and absorb into the mind: assimilate knowledge.
3. To make similar; cause to resemble.
4. Linguistics To alter (a sound) by assimilation.
5. To absorb (immigrants or a culturally distinct group) into the prevailing culture.
VERB:
intr.
To become assimilated
We are not asking every one to act like everyone else in the USA. We are asking to learn the language, and have the common curtsies that we owe each other. Including but not limited to: stealing, throwing rocks at passing cars, CORRECTING your children when they misbehave, not living 20+ people in ONE house, trying to sell drugs on our corners, quit committing ID theft, not driving drunk, and not disrespecting our Country, FLAG and Constitution!

You come to this country because you want a good life, you better be ready to change yourself to be an American. American do not change their ways to accommodate your. This is what assimilation is about.
When in Rome, Do as the Romans do!. Not the other way around. If a White family moves into a black neighborhood, they better be ready to deal with hip hop and soul food. And just don't complain nobody is playing country music!

You mean speak the language of their neighbors so they can talk to them?
Seeing as how White and Black Americans speak the same language with some differences, that should not be a problem.
Now, illegals living in America for a decade and unable to speak English? Big Problem and yet another reason to deport them.

Assimilate does not mean you have to "act" like everyone else. It means that people who come here should at least attempt to learn enough of the language to survive and obey the laws and such.
