We are moving to Townsville to study but need to pick up furniture in Melbourne at relatives house.

Anyone done that trip before, how long does it take? (yes i realize Australia is HUGE and we'll be driving for a few days...maybe more??). Also, any estimate on fuelcosts driving a secondhand 4*4? Thankfull for any thoughts!

ok distance wise it is 2615km
your average car does around 10 litres per 100 kilometers for highway driving even on in a laden 4wd
fuel is currently around 1.18 per litre in the cities

so here is how you figure it out
2615/100
26.15*10
261.50 * 1.18
total $308.57 for fuel

assuming that fuel will be around the same price all the trip

just to be on e the safe side i would add an addition 15%

how does that sound?

oh by the way check out

If you avoid Sydney it will cut down the travel time slightly. Use the Newell and New England Highways for Melbourne to Brisbane. The whole trip will be a little over 3000km. At 100km/h that is 30 hours driving time but you must allow for stops, food, sleep etc. Petrol is going to average at least $1.30 a litre and in a laden 4WD you could be using 20litres per 100km that's 600litres of fuel at nearly $800.

To reduce costs, don't stay in motels but use country pubs. They are basic but clean and cheap. You get to meet the locals and many of them do low cost good meals.

It is a long way but there are many interesting things to see and do. Plan the trip carefully and allow time for sightseeing. You might never be back that way again.

G'day,

Tentofield's given a terrific answer.

Just another thought.... depending on the stuff... have you consider getting a removalist? It might work out cheaper than driving, especially a 4x4. Some of them even wrap the furniture so won't get damaged/scratched.

All the best on your moving :)
