I have read the Bible. The Old Testament to me is the story of how life is without Jesus. Everything is war, racism, and intolerance. Jesus came along and said this is not how it should be. Sadly it still is like that and it is christians who are the most guilty of it.
So yes, some of it is very disturbing, much like our world today.

I have read the whole Bible several times.
There are daily readings besides the readings at Mass.
The Bible is the inerrant word of God and is to be read as the earliest Christians read it: in the light of Tradition and under the guidance of those ordained to teach. The Books of the Old Testament were put together by the Hebrews in the Septuagint which includes the seven Books called "Deuterocanonical" by Catholics and "Apocryphal" by Protestants, and was the Old Testament used by the Apostles.
The idea that all revealed truth is to be found in "66 books" is not only not in Scripture, it is contradicted by Scripture (1 Corinthians 11:2, 2 Thessalonians 2:15, 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 1 Timothy 3:15, 2 Peter 1:20-21, 2 Peter 3:16).
Our Lord founded a Church (Matthew 16:18-19), not a book, which was to be the pillar and ground of Truth (1 Timothy 3:15). We can know what this Church teaches by looking not only at Sacred Scripture, but into History and by reading what the earliest Christians have written, what those who've sat on the Chair of Peter have spoken consistently with Scripture and Tradition, and what they've solemnly defined. To believe that the Bible is our only source of Christian Truth is unbiblical and illogical.

i read,or i should say,i study everyday...and yes, thre are lots of disturbing things in there, which is exactly how life is.i wont quote the bible here for your sake.
i have read the bible[i guessing]maybe 50 times in its entirety.and many other books about religion, including the holy qu'ran.
i wish i could give a proper answer, but i'm afraid you woulnt be interested.it sounds like your mind is already made up.
i doubt,if you lined up every human being side by side, that you would get two same exact perspectives on life and god.i pray that your pursuit of gods grace is your ultimate goal in life, concentrating on the positives and love here on earth, rather than all the negatives.
i would agree with you that many christians are truly clueless when it comes to the bible.but at least most of them believe they're pursuing gods wisdom.i would also say that most non-believers are just as clueless when it comes to what the bible is actually speaking of.
i truly hope that your as happy with your life as i am with mine.
god bless you always!!

I believe some of them read it, then selectively choose which parts we all must take literally and which parts we must interpret as metaphor.
My favorite is when you point out the passages which explain how to keep slaves. Before the Civil War, religious leaders used these passages to justify slavery. But these days, when you point out those passages, Christians say, "You're ignorant, slavery in the Bible was not like slavery in early America, there was a system blah blah blah." So, is slavery right or wrong according to the teaching--which one is it? Apparently it depends on the politics of the age.

There are as many answers to this question as there are christians. We're all individuals and we all approach things differently. Yes, there are some disturbing things in the bible. When God moved men to write the bible He didn't gloss over the less attractive details of the people and their behavior. We can read and see how God dealt with Cain after he murdered his brother Abel. We can identify with Abraham as his faith develops over the years. We can see the heroism while being repulsed as a woman lures an enemy into her tent, then drives a tent stake through his head. We grimace as we read about how one man disembowels another.
We also read about Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his brothers, then put in prison by his owner, eventually placed in high authority over Egypt by the pharaoh, and how he ultimately is the salvation for his family during a 7-year famine.
Then we read about the sinless life of Jesus Christ and how He gave everything, even His life, for our salvation. No matter how ugly our sin, His grace is sufficient to save us from ALL our sin.

You are right. Most have never read it thoroughly. They carry it around on Sundays like it was part of their clothing. At church, the pastor guides them through a few passages and that will be the extent of it until the next Sunday. Why is it necessary to carry the same book year after year after year, if you have read the thing? It is just a conglomerate of books. One can read it in a few weeks and do your read overs in another few weeks.

i hope they actually read the bible. Infact as Christians we are comanded to read the bible daily in order to preach to people. Joshua 1:8 says "This book of the law should not depart from your mouth, and you must in an undertone read in it day and night, in order that you may take care to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way successful and then you will act wisely" Reading the bible is also how we get to know god and his son. Without reading the bible we dont have any hope for the near future. John 17:3 says "This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ" I dont know about the rest of you but i try to take at least 15 minutes out of my day to read the bible.

I'd be curious to know which passages that you are referring to. I have never read the bible so I'm not challenging you.
It is a good question and I hope that you receive some educated answers.

Yes, I do read the Bible. Unfortunately I am one of those who pick and choose time to time something to fit into my own agenda. However, I have found out that God knows what is the best for me.
I actually love to study His Word. I am quite new born again Christian.

I read every day from Genesis to Revelation. And I worship God. I just read four chapters from 2 Samuel this morning on the ascendancy of David to the throne and his attempt to build God a temple.
Would you like to be specific? Without specificities, I can only assume that you have never opened up the book and read it, but just quoting what so many have told you to believe.
