Well here is the thing about taxes. They pay for our roads, our emergency services, schools.. Lots and lots of things you probably take for granted. We absolutely need to pay taxes because individually we couldn't afford to pay for this. you like to ride bikes? You need roads and side walks. you want someone to help you if you get hurt? you need hospitals. You want to be safe at night? you need police. You want to go to school? You need schools. These things are paid for with taxes.

Now they take taxes out of pay checks, this is true, it's called income tax, but the government also spreads taxes over a lot of things, but generally only take a small amount of each. Your father can have an issue with the amount of taxes taken out of this or that, but you should really consider that the things you like and depend on need to be paid for from somewhere and that taxes are a very complicated issue.

I suggest considering taking a course in economics or reading a book on it when you get older. Your father probably has a view in one direction or another already in relation to what taxes are 'fair' and which arn't, but you really ought to decide for yourself by looking at the evidence, rather then listening to other people's views. Often people form ideas without knowing the truth, you need to strive to see the evidence and not just take someone's word for it. Even your parents.

good luck
Ps I think it's great you're interested in this sort of thing at your age. Never lose your curiousity

Hailey, even if you are only 12, you really need to work on your spelling - it's not very good for a 12-year-old.

The taxes on things like clothes are sales taxes, which is a different kind of tax than the taxes taken from your income. And the tax at the end of the year is a calculation based on your income for the whole year - it's the same tax as the income tax that's deducted from a paycheck - at the end of the year you calculate how much you really owe, then if you didn't pay in enough already you pay the rest, or if you overpaid during the year with what was taken out of your paychecks, you get the extra refunded to you.

If you want to pave your own streets, educate yourself, build your own dams and powerplants, defend our shores personally, regulate industry, monitor health, safety, and building standards, negotiate with foreign powers, police your own neighbor, etc - then live somewhere without taxes.

P.S. You'll also have to provide jobs for many of your neighbors.

"If you drive a car I will tax the street, if you try to walk I will tax your feet."
