If you have a cable ready TV, you don't need a receiver unless you want to watch premium channels on it.

most TVs less than 15-20 years old are cable ready but require you to select antenna or cable before trying to tune a channel.
Any cable channel between 2 and 99 are normally tunable with these sets set on cable.
