You need an HD signal in order to watch something in HD. You can get that via cable, satellite or via antenna (if your HDTV has an ATSC tuner). The cable and satellite companies have HD packages but you have to pay extra for them.

The HD signal is not a requirement. Digital capability IS required from 2006 onward (for the TV to have the ATSC tuner built in). The FCC has no jurisdiction over the cable carriers. Yes you will need a HD source. What everyone is getting all mixed up about is the presence of digital signals. Digital may, or may not be HD. Just because you can hook the cable up and get channels like 10-1, or 12-1, and so on, does not mean they will be HD.

yes for the most part if you have an HDTV you should call your cable/sat provider and ask for an HD box so they can send you the HD signal. Your other option is if your TV has the HD tuner built in you can get an HD antenna (HD rabbit ears) and depending on where you live your local networks may be broadcasting for free 'over-the-air' HD signal. check out the link below for 'over the air' or call your cable company for more info.

It depends on how much HD you want. Contrary to other answers, you do not need to upgrade your cable service to get HD, not do you need to buy an over-the-air HD antenna to get HD.

Assuming you have an HDTV with high-def tuners directly on it, then just plug your cable in to it. Then, make sure that you tell the TV to search for all signals, so that it searches for both analog signals and HD signals.

Here's the key: The cable providers are -required- to provide the signal in HD if the over-the-air broadcaster (like ABC, CBS, NBC, etc...) provides it in HD.

You do not need to upgrade to the cable service's HD programming or get a special HD set top box.

So, after telling the TV to "search", you will need to determine what the channel numbers are for the hi def channels. They will be something like 101-5, and 106-2, etc.... In my local area, NBC standard is channel 5, and NBC HD is (I think) 101-5.

Now, if you want anything else, like ESPN HD, then you'll need to upgrade your cable service, as thats not provided as an OTA (over the air) signal.

Nope, its completely up to you. More than likely your tv comes with QAM, ATSC, and NTSC tuners, which means you can run any type of siganl you want. The thing is, you bought an HDTV for a reason, to get HD so in order to do so you have to upgrade to a new box or recieve to get high-definition programming. If you dont want to you can always get HD through an antenna, but if you just want to watch your old programming you can, its fine.
