Michigan has the Great Lakes, Frankenmuth, Mackinac Island, Traverse City, Detroit, Lansing, and Saugatuck, to name just a few. And that doesn't count the entire Upper Peninsula, which is where God goes for his vacations.

I don't know if it's considered midwest, but the ski resorts of Colorado are quite nice for a break from the heat midsummer. I have family outside of Vail and we used to spend some time up there every summer. There are lots of things to do--just no skiing!
