Used to have a golden retreiver. We loved her SO much. They love people. she was great with kids and the cats. She was smart, well behaved and beautiful. She had such a great personality. I'd have to make sure I brushed out her hair or it would get matted, but she was a LOT of fun! We'll be getting another dog soon and will probably adopt a homeless dog. I like chocolate labs, or a yellow lab, or a cheasapeake bay retreiver, or a rottwieller. There's a rotti across the street who is so well mannered and sweet, I might ask them where they got her. She doesn't bother people, loves other dogs and just adores kids! She was standing in front of their house a few weekends ago and their 5 year kid was lying on his stomach on her back and she was just as happy as a dog could be! I like staffordshire terriers too, they are pit bull types and I've known a few that I just LOVE. Weimerreiners are cool dogs and so are vislas. I've always liked the German shorthair dogs. I knew one that was awesome and had lots of trophies and ribbins. GREAT dog! It's gonna be hard for me to choose, but I think I'll go on personality once I see a type of dog that I like. For instance, I wouldn't get a chihuahua. They are cute and I've met some really sweetie pies, but that not the type of dog I want.

It does depend on your lifestyle. And I agree that you should try the rescue centre first.
We have had dobermans for over 20 years since my son was 6 years old and found ours was perfect. However you do need to know what your getting into. We also have 2 rescue dogs. A lakeland terrier and a Gt Dane x Rottie. It is up toy ou the owner to make sure they are raised correctly. You want a loving faithful companion.
We lost our Dobie last year and am in process of looking for another as I find them all of the above with the added bonus that they will protect you and your family and home.

We have been considering that ourselves, considering we have a senior dog and one that is two years old. If something happens to our older dog, we would like to get another to keep our young dog company and have decided on an American Staffordshire terrier or Rotti ( dobermans are in the running also, but I'm sure the Am staff will win out! ( But not for a while cause I hope my old guy has a lot of time left!)

I love my great pyrenees, but they are a large breed and they bark and shed and not everyone is able to handle having this kind of dog.
You need to figure out what kind of dog matches your life style and activity level.
You need to go to a rescue group and look at the dogs. When one appeals to you, ask about the breed traits. BUT... before you go make a list of traits you might want to have in a dog, and how active or quiet a dog you want... how playful a dog you want...
We can't tell you "get this dog; it's nice" because we don't know if the dog WE like will fit your attitudes and interests and life style.
You might hate the other guy's Lab and you might be driven crazy by my pyrs... if you don't have the right kind of personality to live with these breeds... it's like a marriage... you don't just get any old dog because "I" like it... you get it because it matches YOU!

hi
I personally would have a west highland or yorkshire terrier because i like small dogs. Hubby would have a husky because they look cute.
For yourself, it would depend on what type of property you live in, and lifestyle. i.e if you have children or if you work how long would dog be alone for.
Once you consider all those things there are some good websites around that have breed profiles and dog finders built in to them and this can help you find the perfect dog for yourself.

I have a golden retriever and she is the best dog ever. She is good in the house and was easy to housebreak. She also likes to be outside with my other dog who is a Border Collie mix. She is also a good dog, but any working dog will be more active and you need a good yard and they need plenty of exercise. We used to have a fox terrier and while he was cute and we loved him, he was very anxious and afraid of thunder and any loud noise. He was also pretty destructive and liked to dig. He could get out of any fence and was only good in the house if you were with him. He tore up a couple of crates too, so I wouldn't recommend a terrier. I have known a few Labrador retrievers and they make good pets too.

i have always had dobermans and rottwielers out of the two ithink i slightly favour the rottie i was shunned by stupid people who thought that they ate a baby a day but i told them he,s down to three a week, but all i can tell you is that they are only dogs and most of them don,t read the bad press they get so they don,t know that they are supposed to be killers i,ve had three rotties and if you go to a reputable breeder and see if possible both parents you should have no trouble i have had rotties with children ofthree and six and they make perfect family members, and nobody will touch your children or burgle your home the look of a fully grown rottie standing guard is enough

I have a new puppy I got a couple weeks ago.
Shes a pomeranian chihuahua mix and shes adorable!
[Even if chihuahuas and poms are known to be yappy, She doesnt really bark or anything, only when she plays, but thats pretty normal for dogs.]
But this is the dog for me. If you're looking for a new dog, try looking up breeds. You can find breed books at the library.

I have a 10 month old Beagle and he's a brilliant dog especially around children, Beagles are very loving and playful. I had a Cavalier King Charles before the Beagle but unfortunatly they a prone to getting very sick and mine died when she was only six, such a shame for a beautiful dog
