In my opinion, the best ones are supermini-sized, more suitable for chucking round the countryside.
Best value (though not the fastest) is the Suzuki Swift Sport, list price 11699. I've got the standard 1.5, and even that's fun.
For a bit more cash, I'd go for the Mitsubishi Colt CZT, which has got a turbocharged 1.5.
I would discount the Fiesta ST and Corsa VXR, as they are way too chavvy.

It depends on price more than anything else.
For cheap - the Ford Focus ZX-3.
For not-so-cheap, any of the jap models (though the Mazda 3 hatchback probably isn't much more than the Focus).
Then there is VW.
Mostly just a matter of what you like - and what you are going to use it for. All of them are pretty fast stock - and can be modded to be ridiculously fast.

I'd go for the latest RenaultSport Clio - I had a Clio 182 and it went like 5h1t off a shiney shovel.

It's not a hatch, but if you want Porsche beater performance on the cheap it's hard to beat the Subaru Impreza WRX STi. 300 bhp, AWD with eyeballs-to-the-back-of-your-head acceleration.
