That it is often quite easy to say that something is wrong when it doesn't personally affect your life?
For exampe; homosexuality, abortion, in vitro, stem cell research, interracial relationships and so on.
I have learned that through my life I have my own beliefs, but to keep my mind open to other peoples decisions because I have simply not walked in their shoes. I was not put here on earth to be the judge of what is good and what is evil. . .I believe I am here to show compassion and to love.. . .that the way I live my life is most important for me and for those around me.

I very much agree with this.

What floors me is how many 'Christians' have such strong stances on things they have absolutely no experience or knowledge in. Particularly homosexuality. I am astonished to see how thoroughly convinced so many of these people are that gay people 'choose' to be gay, that we are nothing more than 'confused' heterosexuals. When asked to support their stance they point to the Bible, whose verses on homosexuality are far outnumbered by verses on heterosexuality, or even food. When challenged on why they are singling out a handful of (often mistranslated) phrases about homosexuality but completely ignoring verses about, say women not teaching in church or men staying unmarried (as Paul exhorted) they say that we can't 'pick and choose' what to follow and what not to. And yet, there they are, doing just that.

Women must keep their heads covered in church: an outdated, quaint practice we needn't pay attention to.

Women must keep silent in church: oh, come now, we have grown quite a bit socially since then.

A man lying with a man is an abomination: God's Word!

And yet, shown this blatant contradiction, most hard-line fundamentalist 'Christians' will accuse me of taking things 'out of context.'

I think your approach is the wisest and clearest. Do not judge. You know, I think Jesus may have said something to that affect...

I do agree. I think you learn all of this through age and maturity and as you are indeed exposed to new things. I wasn't nearly as open-minded about much at all in my 20's as I am in my 30's. I was raised very small town and in the South. This is not a good mix to be open minded. Once I got out and lived a little bit I was exposed to more and more. Now, I live in a huge metropolitan area that accepts gay people and I frequent their business and go to the Pride Festivals, I have two friends who have had abortions, I totally agree with invitro, stem cell reasearch and have two very best friends with mixed children who I love dearly. So, my views from many years ago and how I was raised have changed and prospered and I have learned to love without judgment. Most people get mad and judgmental when faced with things they are scared of or that they might relate to (like a homophoic person "hating" gays - - maybe they have gay thoughts and it scares them so its easier to hate).

I think that is a good view. It is indeed a different feeling story when something hits home. However, we should not let our feelings to fool us. I believe that God's Word is the same for everyone and all the circumstances.

I think that we should value the life of our own and others. Jesus asks us to show compassion and love.

How could any informed individual not have an opinion about those things?

And about love and compassion: Those are good things to have.

But what are Christians supposed to do but preach the Gospel? It is important for those who are Christian to keep in mind that the issues of the day are but shadows, and the truth of Jesus Christ is most important to talk about.

Mostly, I'd say that it's easy to call something wrong when it's something that you aren't comfortable with. When it's something you know little about, and when you don't have any direct experience to give you insight.

But I agree. Far too many people are interested in things that don't affect their lives.

Sparkles, I have found that when Christians are following a "creed of beliefs" instead of following closing behind a person (Christ) - they will violate love every time.

You can notice them easily, because they are always trying to "correct" someone.

Very good question and I agree.

I agree, but it's also easy to say something is wrong if you know it's wrong even when it does personally affect you if you're truly honest with yourself and God and you're trying to live a Christlike life.

Yes...I agree with this.

This is a basic statement (tenant) of compassion,
that we keep an open mind and try to understand
what others are saying, doing, feeling.

Not necessarily, I'd reword it to say that it's often quite easy to say that something is wrong when it's actually causing someone harm or suffering. The only exception is if someone's perceived to be causing harm (by the recipient or person being "stopped") or suffering using compassion because it's only harm to the ego of the person CAUSING the harm/suffering. (i.e. hypocrites)
