Even though I personally own this ultra compact camera, I would still like to highly recommend the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L10 for the following reasons:

1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time;
2. Has a 3x optical zoom;
3. Takes "continuous" 2 frames per second "action/sports" images;
4. Has macro feature for close-ups of small objects focused under 6 inches;
5. The flash setting for "red-eye" correction is on the navigator wheel and not within a submenu;
6. It's very small and light;
7. Uses inexpensive SD memory cards - a 2 gig card sells for $19 at samys.com;
8. The digital video feature takes wonderful "sound" videos which are noise free. It records the piano very well with it's built-in microphone;
9. It comes with a USB 2.0 transfer cable which you connect to your USB computer port;
10. Has tripod mount on bottom of camera;
11. And the price is a mere $119 [sold at Samy's Camera - samys.com, and Staples.com.]

Review(s) can be found at amazon.com:

along with pictures provided by satisfied purchasers.]

Getting back to what's an affordable "pro" camera, you should begin with a very basic and affordable camera set up such as the Pentax K series, starting with the K100D 6.1 mp start-up camera system with an 18-55 mm normal lense and 50-200 mm telephoto currently offered with (1) case, (2) tripod, (3) 1 gb SD card and (4) 200 free prints - for $600 at samys[dot]com.

Here's a rave review of the Pentax K100D: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_reviews/k100d_pg7.html

Good luck!

Ok this is a hard question to ask...1. how much you willing to spend? 2. what features do you want? 3.do you want a compact digital, prosumer(bridge),or dslr? 4. how often will you use it? 5.are you experienced in cameras? 6. do you want to expand with your camera?

ok i just got a panasonic lumix dmc-fz50 digital camera...a serious prosumer digital camera about 3 weeks ago. now this camera you can take point and shoot pics or you can go manual and change everything you want. the lens is a 12x optical zoom that is equal to a 35-420mm lens on a 35mm film camera. take into the 2x/4x digital zoom and you have one heck of a zoom range. but this is a serious camera that if you do not want to carry alot of lenses around then just carry one camera around for everything... this has 15 scene modes to chose from...one thing if you get a camera like this... get a tripod!! yes it has image stabilization but a tripod works wonders... more info contact me at Tallbowler67@yahoo.com

oh and you can get this for about $400 online and it is a 10mp digital camera

If money is no object, a Sinar P2 or P3 view camera with the Sinarback eMotion 75 LV 33-megapixel digital back and Schneider Optics lenses.

That will set you back a minimum of US$40,000 not including the lens.

Please post a new question. Tell us how much you want to spend, what you plan to use the camera for most of the time, and what your prior experience is with photography. With this information, we will be much more helpful to you.

Steve's reviews updates the "Best Camera" list periodically:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html

This is somewhat out of date, but check this page for a general idea:

http://tech.yahoo.com/rc/digital-cameras/103 Most cameras mentioned have been replaced with newer models, which we will hope are as good or better than what they replaced.

Here's another resource for you. Look on down the page if you are interested in point and shoot cameras instead of dSLR's.

Here's another listing in order by ratings. They are only separated according to general groups, such as "Highly Recommended," etc. They are NOT listed within the groups according to higher rating. They are listed by date tested.

Use this free (and unbiased) site to search on the features and price range you want: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp

The SLR cameras will give you the best pictures. The compacts will give you the best price. You'll need to decide which best is best!

For point and shoot . . .
Casio Z75 or Z1050 is a great choice, nice and thin, lightweight, shoots photos and video with sound. Easy to use controls and a 2.5" screen to view.

Recommend a Scandisk memory card, about 2GB.
Check you Sunday paper for ad sales or coupons.

For 35mm Digital . . .
Nikon
