Most insurance companies and good doctors use the 100 lb. rule. Then also considered with what your BMI is. They are typically looking for a BMI of at least 40. If you have no co-morbidites some are requioring a BMI of 45.
This is very serious surgery that should only be a last resort.
You should have tried many different types of diets over an extended periold of time - and have serious concerns for your health before having Gastic Bypass Surgery.
Most insurance companies and quality surgeons will also requior that you have a psycological evaluation before surgery.
If you want the surgery for the sake of your looks - do not do it - this surgery is for your health. A person can loss the 30 - 50 lbs. that you mentioned, with programs that do not put them at other risks.
Just implimenting the eating ristrictions that Gastric Bypass patients have to follow will help a person loss weight sensibly, and develop habits that can help the weight stay off:
1) Do not drink with your meals or for 30 minutes before you meal or for 1 hour after your meal.
2) Drink at least 48 -64 oz. of non-caffinated beverage a day.
3) Eat the protein in your meal first.
4) Chew each bite for at least 20 times, and until the food is totally pulverized.
5) Wait between bites - you want to extend a little meal over about 20 minutes. When you are no longer hungary stop eating. It takes the brain about 20 minutes to register that you are no longer hungary. If you eat quickly you will over eat , because you have eaten too much before your brain seeneds the full signals. - You need to learn when your are trully hungary or when you want food for some other reason.
6) Only eat at meal times - Do not graze.
7) Exercise regularly. Do both cardio & strength building exercise.
8) Find people that will help you with the behavior modification that you are doing for your health and support you.
Many Surgeions requior that you loss weight before they will do the surgery to show that you are committed to following the dietary restrictions that you will have to consider for the rest of your life.
This surgery means that forever you will need to by monitored for Iron, B-12, and Vitamin D levels as these are absorbed by a part of the intestine that is no longer used after most of the types of Gastric Bypass surgery that is currently being preformed. There are also the posibilities of serious complications.
If I eat pasta, bread, items with very much fat or many vegetables, I get sick and throw up. If I eat much sugar, either refined or from fruit, I have a stomach ache. If I eat carbs. I have gas. Just eating at the levels that Gastric Bypass patients have to eat at for the rest of life will get many patients with 30-50 lbs. to lose to goal weight.

Most doctors will want you to be morbidly obese (100 lbs. or more) before they will even consider this procedure. I recomend doing some serious research on it.
Yes you may lose weight, but are the side effect really worth doing it that way?
Some of the things that have change for the ppl I know who have had that surgery:
Extreme gassyness, Vomiting from eating too much (1/2 cup worth of food), loose bowel movements, sagging skin, loss of breast tissue (female), stomach aches, hair loss, vitamin deficiancy, loose teeth and more.
It may help lose weight that is dangerous for your health, but it is irreversible and can cause lifelong problems from the side effects. if your only mildly overweight (30 to 50 lbs) do it the oldfashion way, you wont' have all the risks.

Ask ur doc.
Eat only when hungry and not more than thrice a day. Nothing other than water in between. Include plenty of uncooked vegetables and fruits in each meal, preferably 50%. Chew each morsel at least 32 times to activate ur body to generate signals of hunger/fullness. Obey these signals.
Take light exercises and brisk walks regularly preferably twice a day.
U will achieve what u have not even dreamt and that too in a reasonable time. Do not be in a hurry.

Yes, doctors tend to focus on patients over 100 pounds overweight. 30 to 50 isn't enough for the procedures. Plus, many doctors require patients to lose 30 pound or so before operating to ensure optimum health.
