Calling a fire engine Denise wouldn't sound quite right. It could also be because Dennis is the company that manufactures them.

Dennis, actually John Dennis began building commercial vehicles in 1904. Dennis is the name of the manufacturer. Really the first manufacturer of fire trucks.

Years ago they were called Leyland, Ford, Bedford but like previous answers they are predominantly Dennis, after the Dennis Bros. and they are even creeping south of the border, I`ve seen some called Angus.

Named after the owners who thought that Dennis was the perfect name.
Dennis Bros. Ltd, established by John and Raymond Dennis in 1901, and its successive companies.
In 1895 John Dennis (1871-1939) opened the Universal Athletic Stores in High Street, Guildford. He was joined by his brother Raymond Dennis (1878-1939) and they began producing the 'Speed King' and 'Speed Queen' bicycles. The brothers expanded into motor tricycles, and by 1900 were making motor quadricycles.
