He's a Chihuahua and we're guessing Corgi mix. He's smallish and quite thin -- we're trying to fatten him up. He was on the streets then the animal shelter found him. He's healthy apparently and just got his operation. The vet said he just has to have some dental work done. Also, he's between 5 and 10 years old we're guessing.

Chihuahuas can live 15-20 years, corgis a little less, depending on health and diet. He still has a few good years left in him, especially with his new home!

Congrats on your dog!

Smaller dogs can live a long time with good care. My terrier lived to be 19 yrs old. Generally though, you're looking at about 10-15 years of a good healthy life. My dog, in the last 3 years, lost control of her bowels, went blind, and was deaf. We actually put her down at 19 because she had no quality of life left.

Using diets from the vets book written by Dr. Pitcairn you might see 20-25 years old, using premium commercial pet food, top spot flea killers (Fipronil) and over vaccination, maybe 10-13 years.

small dogs live longer than large breeds, usually. This dog could reach at least 15 years old.
