My 7 year old nephew is fine with him, my 5 year old neice is usually okay but my 3 year old nephew isn't.
The 5 & 3 year old have a dog of their own who is big, loves attention and doesn't care what the kids do to him. The 5 year old understands certain things she can't do with my dog, who's quite small, but the 3 year old does not listen and keeps up whatever he's doing until the dog scratches or barks at him, then he cries. They're staying with us for the week and its getting on my nerves, obviously my dog needs to be a little kinder, but he just had his operation and he's very tender, the 3 year old tries to lay on his stomach and jump on him like he does with his dog. What do I do?

Three years old can't separated toys from living things yet.
In other words I think your dog doesn't like your 3 year old nephew because your nephew treats him like just another toy.
My advice don't leave them alone and makes sure your nephew plays gently with your dog.
P.S : Believe me you don't want on your conscience that your dog bit your nephew.
Also when is parents pick your nephew up talk to them about his behavior, your nephew just has a lack of disipline.

Keep them apart - this will probably mean the child having the run of your home and the dog being restricted, but if your dog is recovering from an illness and your nephew is 3 years old, you really want to prevent an incident from happening. It's only a week. It will pass.

At 3 he should be able to understand to not go near this dog without supervision of an adult. He also should be able to understand that the dog has an oowwee and if there is still a scar or stitches, you show it to him to explain that the dog is off limits because he is very sore. Be up front with the parents about your concerns that the dog and the children around him.
Good luck

Letting the kid continue with your dog is not going to make it more tolerant.
What breed is your dog? I'm guessing it's not one that is notorious for getting along well with small children. It may be difficult, but explain to the three-year-old that your dog doesn't like to play like his dog does, and he needs to be careful or the dog could bite, since that is how dogs tell people they hurt. Supervise the three year old when he is with the dog to make sure neither party gets hurt. Try to direct the kid to what the dog DOES like, be it playing tug, fetch, or gentle petting.
Good luck!

Tell the kid NO talk to the parents obviously the kid isn't listening and i understand he is small but the dog needs to be kept away from the child before the dog bites him and you end up getting sued.YOUR HOUSE YOUR RULES if they don't like it then they shouldn't be there good luck.

keep the kid AWAY from the dog., the dog is in HIS home, therefore it is not right to punish or sequester the dog.
Three year olds are old enough to understand the word NO. use it frequently, and if his parents are there, they should be the ones enforcing it.
your house, your animal, YOUR ground rules. otherwise, they can get a hotel.
