I would say ~ yes.
I traveled to Mexico two years ago and I have sent my papers to get a visa just in case. I am from Russia and am a resident of the US as well.
In the end, I was just asked to show my US driver license and my Russian passport, but I do remember the immigration officer from Mexico checked my visa papers.
I would recommend you to do this just in case.

Check with the Mexican consulate to make sure, but I think that EU member citizens just need a passport. The Spanish embassy website for Mexico should have this information as well.

Your passport may suffice, but you may need something showing that you reside in US.
Check with US immigration to be sure you have no problem re-entering US.
How can you hold a passport from Spain if you do not have an address in Spain and not living there?

I recently was told, by a great source, that you can no longer get into Mexico without a passport.
As long as you have a government (by your country) issued passport, that's all you need.
