I wouldn't worry too much about it. I spit on people all the time. They don't even have to say anything. Sometimes I just don't like the look of people. Know what I mean?
I think you should take it up with your manager. Be mature, explain the situation. Then flob in his face.

I'm afraid calling you a t**t doesn't warrant being spat at, but you shouldn't be called a t**t for having a stapler, all sounds a little childish to me.
It will be in your contract though regarding the spitting as it's classed as physical abuse.
You wont do that again will you!

sorry to say that they probably can and by the sounds of it, they already have done. Are you in a union, if so your in with a fighting chance. Have you had any other previous warnings wheather they be verbal or written? Theye cant just sack you on the spot for a small thing like that, unless you have a bad previous record. get on to the union about this failing that, I'd go to C.A.B. for advice.
Good luck

Yes, they can, since if your colleague went to the police and complained, they'd call it assault and arrest you.
What in the name of God made you think spitting on someone was an acceptable response to being called a tw@t?
Sorry, but you got yourself sacked. It's not the company's fault.

Yes, it's also a criminal offence called common assault. You deserved everything you got. If you spat at me I'd go to the police after I'd had you sacked.

It sounds like the Etiquette section is too advanced for you. If your response to being called a name is to spit on someone then you need to go back and repeat kindergarten. That is the age where most people learn that spitting is not appropriate behavior.

Yes they are within their rights to sack you. Spitting on a colleague is rude and disgusting. Some companies could call it Gross misconduct but most would call it misconduct,
Companies have a responsiblity to protect satff from any form of harrasment, Spitting is one form.

Yes, in some localities, you can even be arrested and put on trial for assault for spitting on someone, whether you offer to clean his coat or not.

In NY it is. Not to mention that it is disgusting, and it reflects very badly on your people skills.
If someone calls you an obscene name , take it to a supervisor (if you haven't got the wit or the charm to verbally stop them yourself).
And keep your hand off of other people's property.
