just for kicks i went with a friend to a requiters office.
we talked for awhile and i decided it would be a good idea to inlist.
i was then sent to take a test called an ASFAB.
i passed with a 96% and everyone was telling me how good that was and started throwing words around like officer material and such.
well before i go any further and sign up i want to know what excatly the asfab is and why is 96% so special or are they just blowing smoke up my butt.
so please anyone that can help me understand i would be grateful.

Alright listen to a good answer now. a 96 % overall score is really good. Like someone mentioned earlier if you do not have your degree or at least in your senior year of college, then you are not officer material yet.
As good as your score is, those requirements must be met first.
Now for enlisted purposes..
That score will qualify you for top bonuses, and also most jobs in the Army, depeneding on how your scores breakdown..
You really need to sit down with a recruiter, and figure out what you want to do. Ignore all the haters on here... most of them cant even qualify for the Army. The army is very selective, and as a recruiter I have to turn away more people then I enlist. So if you do meet all qualifications you should look into it, and make an inofrmed decision. Do not rush into anything, even if your recruiter applies a little pressure.

It means you should be able to write your own ticket once the more focused boot camp tests are taken - usually by surprise so you get sleep the night before and they are more validly representative of your knowledge and skills thereby.
It was a similar test with a different name back in 1960 when I took it at age 17 when half-way through my junior year in High School. My high score is what allowed them to let me obtain written permission from my divorced parents to join the navy as a high school dropout. My scores in the more focused tests in boot camp were also high. Everyone also pushed toward officer training but I refused and stayed in the intelligence area for several years - found fewer than 10% of the officers I encountered worthy of respect and didn't want to become part of such a fowled up system.
The GI Bill paid for both my undergradute and graduate degrees after I left the service after 7 1/2 years.

It is not done in percentages. And what did you get a 96 on? General?
It's good no matter what. But you can't be an officer until you have a bachelors degree of 3.5 GPA or higher.
The military is a great way of life with a lot of benefits other jobs wont give you right off the bat. Like 30 days paid leave per year. Unlimited sick days (as long as a doctor says you need to be off.) Medical, dental, and the list goes on.

First of all its ASVAB (Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Test). This test is administered to anyone who is signing up for any military branch of service. This shows and tests your abilities on common subjects such as math, science, electrical, mechanics, etc.
Since you scored so high on the ASVAB they really want you because they can pretty much put you into whatever you want to sign up for.
Just because you score high on the ASVAB doesn't mean you can join as an officer though. In order to be an officer you have to go through Officer Canadicy School (OCS, ROTC) and have at least a Bachalor's degree in any subject. They don't just give out 2nd Lt bars. Or any officer rank for that matter.

well as you know, on the ASVAB there are many different facets of this test. so you got a 96% in which section is the better question. i scored a 98% in 3 sections, and then above average in the others. What this means is that you scored better than 96% of the people who take this test. So what you're going to want to find out is which sections, because that'll determine what you're eligible for. But yes, there is smoke being blown....so tread lightly.

If you got a 96 on your AFQT score then yes you scored extremely well. For the Air Force, depending on how you physically qualified and whether or not you have law violations and or admitted to using any type of drugs will depend on what job you qualify for. As fas as an officer I believe every branch now requires you to have a college degree. Get every thing in writing.

It's called "trying to sucker you in". Go check out an ROTC program at a college... same kinda thing. You can join ROTC and get a free college education but have to serve 6 years after graduation. Best part about it... if after the first year of college/ROTC, you don't want to join after college, you can walk aaway from it. Then you have at least one year of college under your belt. You will have active reserves to attend.
DO NOT let this recruiter tell you to sign up as an enlisted man and say he's going to send you to OCS. READ everything and if you have any questions... ask!

Do you have a college degree? You can't become an officer in the military unless you have a degree. So them throwing around officer material and such is moot without a degree. Also its called the ASVAB, and you wouldn't know your score the same day, it usually takes a few days for your score to come back...so that is where I caught you in your first lie.
I was in the U.S.Army for 4 years. What was your GT score?

You can't spell. You blew the name of the test!!
Punctuation seems to be a problem.
The questions you have previously asked were in Spiritual and Religion. This is true for your answers too.
Now you want to be in the US Military?
I also tested high and failed the OCS test. So I am also not perfect.
Think of the test as an IQ test. Having a high IQ and 0 common sense along with $.75 will get you a Snickers bar at most US grocery stores.

The ASFAB is designed so anyone with an ounce of common sense can pass it. It is how they give you the impression that you are a step ahead of the others and will get your choice of jobs and training. What they don't tell you is that you are on a level playing field with the other recruits, and that they are given just as much choice as you are.
I'm not against you enlisting, because that is the "AMERICAN" thing to do, and I think all americans should serve in order to reap the benefits of freedom. BUT I want you to keep in mind, that the armed forces will do anything to get you to enlist.
