I am getting a ps3... I was thinking of getting an small HDTV but I won't be able to have HD setup with my cable company because I am not paying for cable, I will be living in the dorm...
Does the ps3 via blue ray or itself enhance viewing on regular tvs?
I don't want to buy an HDTV and be annoyed at the quality when I watch regular tv without HD programming...
What about EDTV's or LCD? Would it vary if I bought an EDTV or LCD versus my current tube type tv?
Any advice??

If I were you I'd get a 19 or 20" LCD HDTV. Your games will look awesome and regular stations won't look horrible on it (though if you go with a larger size TV they will look progressively worse the larger you go). Make sure your tv has an HDMI input (you can do HD with component, but HDMI is better and carries audio too so less cables) and use that to hook up the PS3. You can get an HDTV of this size for around 250-300 bucks. Even on small TVs HD gives you a more realistic, almost 3d picture and your games will come to life.

ps3's blu ray disk player plays full hd movies in 1080p.

it is the best image for now.

a HDTV has there type of images: 720p, 1080i, 1080p.

a movie at 720p will look amazing but if you want the best of the best, get a 1080p full hd tv.

another thing: if you get a 19inch 720p HDTV, it will look totally amazing but a 52inch at 720p won't look that good.

why? the amount of the pixels are the same but the pixel itself is much larger because of the size of the tv.

if you are looking for a tv bigger than 42inch, try to get a 1080p

hope this helps.

given:
ps3 outputs 1080P resolution.

a tv with less resolution will probably look like a tv with HD on an analog signal - well maybe a digital 720P signal.

Any TV on an analog signal will look poor.

Questions:
what do you want to spend?
can you get a smaller pix at a higher res for the same money?
do you want to see the sharpest pix the PS3 can show you?

bottom line - your choice based on your desires.
