this has happend to me five times on international flights in the last year. Every time, they have eventually returned it. In the mean time, I washed some clothes in the hotel sink and took advantage of the opportunity to buy myself some new clothes in Europe.

If they never find it, you are entitled to a small amount of compensation, certainly not enough to replace the luggage and its contents. Check with your carrier, because it depends to a large extent on where in the trip the bags were lost.

By the way, under IATA rules, the last carrier you flew on on the trip is responsible for the bags, even if another airline lost it, so, for instance if you flew over on United and then took a Lufthansa flight to your final destination, Lufthansa would be responsible for getting you your bag, even if UA lost it, so they might not be as motivated as you would hope for.

Good luck and have fun shopping for new clothes in Italy.

Yes, but we got very lucky in the end. This day we saw tons of delays, and missed the opening night of an event that we were registered for. We flew from San Antonio, Tx to Dallas (DFW) and then DFW to Louisville,Ky. We stood there for a while not seeing our luggage, and nonticed others who were on the same flight were still waiting for theirs as well. We were worried because we still had to drive from Louisville to King's Mills, OH (King's Island) where the first part of the convention we were attending was being held. It turned out that something wasn't delivered, and our luggage finally showed up. With a huge sigh of relief, and some alleve for my headache, we picked up the rental car and hit the road.
Usually, if luggage is lost, the airline will deliver to your hotel room, but I am not sure how far they will drive to deliver. That is what we were worried about. If the bags are never found, the airline has a limited liability to you. It is best to check with the airline. It is a good idea to pack a few days worth of clothes and all of your medicines and essentials in your carry-on luggage.

I didn't get my luggage when I went to Morocco a couple years ago. They finally sent one bag to the airport and I got it in the middle of my trip, what a hassle. I told the British Airways flight attendant what happened on my return trip and she told me to itemize everything in my bag including the bag, and the costs, plus my hotel stay for 4 days and taxi trips back and forth to the airport, plus toiletries and the price of my nightgown. I called British Airways and told them, they said to wait two weeks and then file. I never got my back so I did. My total expenses were over $1350 and British Airways sent a check for that, which surprised me. I had as many receipts for the clothes and other items as I could find and had no receipts for the hotel in Marrakech or clothes (bought at a bazaar) but the prices were very reasonable for the summer months. It messed up 4 days of my trip but the good thing was that we met some nice people and went places we wouldn't have other wise visited, Mount Toubkal and Ourika Valley and two sisters invited us to their home in Agadir, they treated us like royalty. What an experience, something good came out of something bad. I've had delayed luggage 3 other times but those happened on my return trip home and the bags were delivered to my door. So no real problem there.

The airline loses it most of the time, not the airport. This is why the experts say to carry the essentials in your carry-on luggage.

When it happened to us, the airline told us that they would deliver the bags to us. We were on the last leg on the way home, and lived about 100 miles from the airport. A day or two later, the bag showed up - they drove it out and delivered it personally.

Yes, we lost a bag coming from Schiphol airport in Amsterdam to Bucharest Romania. I was so freaked out, I was convinced that I would never see it again. We got it back the next morning...and we didn't even land till 4 the previous afternoon. I was so happy. Did you file complaint with the airlines? Other than that I am not sure what to tell you..we had help when we arrived cause of the language and they handled everything including picking up our bag the next morning and delivering it to our new apt...

yes! that happened once to me and my parents on a trip to france a few years ago. Our luggage was only lost for about a day though. It was frustrating to live out of my carry on though. If they never find it, airlines usually give you some money or a discounted flight or something to make up for it.

Yes, they put my bag on the wrong airplane...so it went for an extra trip...good thing was that it was on the way home, so I had other clothes and things to use at home while I waited for my bag to arrive back from pittsburgh...poor bag!!! It took just one extra day, but I had to go pick it up at the airport. They weren't very pleasant about it, but they weren't rude either. Kinda just, indifferent. It happens all the time...unfortunately.

If they never find it, they never find it. Some airlines may compensate you somehow (discounts off your next flight, etc.), but they really don't see it as their problem or want to be held responsible for it. It's like how security usually doesn't compensate if they steal something expensive from you (ever notice how people's expensive valuables tend to be seen as "dangerous"?). Excuse me for being cynical, but that's the way they work.
