I understand that exercise is exertion and exertion causes you to sweat. Some people prespire easily and others do not. I rarely sweat, even in extreme conditions, when the first few beads appear around my hairline, I am near passing out!!
Surely, no one would suggest that I exercise until I pass out. So can some of you fitness gurus help me understand the mentality in "do it until you sweat"....
Some say when you sweat you are burning calories, but it seems to me that sweating is an indication that you have dehydrated yourself and that is not healthy........
Would someone clarify these things for me?

Sweating is simply a mechanism for the body to cool itself. When you workout, you generate heat and your force your body to cool itself, and thus sweat. The body temperature has to be regulated for all the internal chemical reactions to take place.
Sweating isnt burning calories, sweating is just an indication that your body has done work, and generated heat, using calories to generate that heat, since people are different, and everyone sweats at different points like you pointed out, the best advice would be to measure activity and increase that gradually, After all, its activity that burns calories, not sweat.

Sweating is the body's mechanism to help keep you cool(er) in hot weather. If you do not sweat easily then I would not recommend you exercise until you sweat, if that would have you near collapse.
Speak to your doctor and make sure there isn't a medical reason why you don't perspire as easily as you should, but otherwise listen to your body in other ways (tired, muscle fatigue) to get an idea of when you've worked out enough. Sweating isn't the best indicator that you've gotten in a proper workout.

Sweat is simply the bodies way of cooling itself off and is not necessarily indicative of how hard you are exercising. If you are naturally "warm blooded" you'll sweat more under any condition. If you exercise to the point where you can't do anymore you'll have gotten a good workout regardless of your sweat output.

Basically, sweating is a response to a rise in one's body temperature during exercise. It is all part of the process of "homeostasis" - maintaining a constant internal body environment. When your body does exercise, cells respire quicker, muscles contract etc. and body temperature rises.
The sweat glands in your skin layers sense this and release sweat. As the sweat evaporates from your skin, it takes with it the latent heat of vaporisation from your body. This cools your body down after exercise.
It basically means that you've had a good workout and your body is now trying to cool down...
Hope this helps!

No when you DON'T sweat it means you have dehydrated yourself. Sweat is actually a very healthy thing. Sweating is actually your bodys cooling mechanism to keep you from overheating. just like dogs panting because they cannot sweat. If your not sweating the you are not drinking enough liquids.

i dont think sweating means ur burning calories... its like a way of your body cooling itself... you can get dehydrated if you dont keep water in your body because sweat is mainly water which is the coolant... the sweat evaporates which leaves u feeling a little cooler... and obviously dont exercise til u pass out lol... youre definetely still burning calories whether you sweat or not.. if people exercise harder and faster their bodies heat up quicker which makes them sweat.. maybe you exercise gradually? and your body gets used to the heat before it needs to sweat? idk lol

there is no relation between calories burning and sweating...sweating is released from the body to decrease the high body tempreture during excersize...if u dont sweat this means that ur bodies tempreture is not high...
u should feel lucky for not sweating much
thats it

Some people sweat and some don't - I don't. I get red in the face, my legs/back/arms ache but I just don't sweat. So....don't sweat it - means we don't smell either!!!!

sweating does not mean you are losing weight-the only way to tell how much weight you are losing is by keeping track on a monitor, either on the machine you are working out on, or a monitor that you can clip onto your waist
