Because the logical conclusion of a sustainable worldview is Socialism. Reactionaries invented the connection because Environmentalism is a threat to the unfettered power of the Capitalists. We already live in a mixed economy, get over it.

As your question uses many ridiculous labels and stereotypes, it's hard to determine what you're really asking. Is a "global warming alarmist" anyone who agrees with the scientific consensus that humans are the primary cause of the current global warming and wants to do something about it?
Unfortunately most global warming deniers are conservatives, so I'll assume that's what you're talking about. I find that deniers are usually very poorly informed and accept misinformation as fact. For example, that the sun or volcanoes or water vapor are responsible for the increase in global warming. Or they don't even know that global warming is accelerating. Or they don't even believe that global warming is happening, which is the height of ignorance since a 5 second search for a global temperature graph will tell you otherwise.
As for why it's mostly conservatives who deny the reality of global warming, it's because of the partisanship of the USA and the fact that much of the Republican party has made it a partisan issue. However, guys like President Bush and Newt Gingrich have acknowledged that humans are the primary cause of global warming. I'd hardly call Gingrich a "big government liberal" - LOL!
Unfortunately while Al Gore has drawn much attention to the issue, he's also become the face of global warming. Conservatives see Al Gore and they automatically say 'liberal! The whole thing is a hoax!'.
Examine the scientific evidence please.

Frankly, I don't care whether air pollution is the primary cause of global warming or not. That's not the only reason why we need to take action. Here in the Phoenix area, we have high pollution warnings on a regular basis, often serious enough that they tell even healthy adults to stay inside or limit their outdoor activities. If air that is unsafe to breathe isn't enough to convince you that something should be done to improve air quality, what will it take?
I've heard some conservatives say they don't even want to spend the fraction of a second it takes to decide whether to throw a soda can in the recycling bin or the trash unless someone is going to pay them for recycling. That's not just laziness or greed talking. That's taking an aggressive stance against taking care of our planet, which is the only one we have, just to spite the liberals, which is childish. There are steps we could take that wouldn't be hardships for anyone, and it's time to stop making excuses and start taking care of the Earth.
By the way, I had to laugh at the remark about "big government liberals". In case you haven't been reading the news for the past six years or more, neocons like big government far more than liberals do. Why else would they keep trying to amend the Constitution at the drop of a hat?

They aren't. The US is the only place on Earth where climate change theory has become a partisan issue. Everyone else in the developed world, whether liberal, conservative, or whatever, generally accepts global warming theory. Look it up yourself, and weep at your own ignorance : p.

You answered your own question; but yes, socialists and liberal politicians are using global warming to advance their political agenda - complete government control over every aspect of our lives.

I'm sure its a little of both. Though Liberals and Democrats do tend to support the enviroment moreso than republicans (though not always). I would do my own research before i completely dismiss the warming theory. Most of these scare tactics wether it be global warming or terrorism, have some basis is fact.

Why are conservatives against protecting the environment or even recycling or hybrid cars for that matter?
To answer your question, it's probably some posturing. Both political parties like to grandstand.
