Most of the time there is a set budget involved - or least a number you don't want to go above. For most brides to be, their rings are 1.5 carats and below. Depending on quality and size the diamond determines the price of the ring. Another thing that will factor in is the kind of metal used for the band and if there are side stones, etc. You can something for as little as 4-5k and go as high as you want - the possibilities are endless.

The old addage was 2 months salary for an engagement ring. This may not be the case for many people (depending on stage in life, etc.), but would be something to shoot for. When I worked at jewelry store, the average was a 1 carat ring for anywhere from $2400 to about $5000.

Look for color---really this means colorless, clarity--very clear with no visible marks throughout the stone, cut--be sure that the stone is cut well and symmetrical. Go to a high end store and have the salespeople show you the stone under a loop or a microscope. They should explain all of the details you need to know. You don't have to buy there, but the education will be valuable.

I am not sure if you are talking wedding ring or engagement ring here. The engagement ring is traditionally the more expensive of the two. But I think the cost is irrelevant. You need to first set a budget. Dont go into debt over it. Then go to the jeweller, tell them your price range then get them to show you what they have in that range. There will be many beautiful rings to choose from. Think of the one that will suit your loved one. I dont think there is an "average" cost because people have such different budgets!!! I have a friend whose wedding set cost about $400, and then I have another friend who has a $5,000 engagement ring. My man has taken so long to even think of us being engaged because he thought it was the done thing to spend $10,000 on a ring!!! And he cant afford that without going into debt, so he put it off. It really is all about what you can comfortably afford or save up for. Good luck.

I think I saw online that the cost was $3000 for an engagement ring in the US.

But more than 80 percent of American brides receive a diamond engagement ring (at an average cost of around $3,200) before they get married.

Haven't run across average size. I imagine it is under 1 carat.

I've heard that the average size is 1 carat, the average cut is Princess cut, and the average ring style is solitaire.

Once you do more research, you'll find that depending on the 4 C's (carat, colour, cut, clarity), diamonds will vastly vary in price.

That's like asking how much does a car cost. There's so many options out there.

Find out what styles she likes and then go looking, take a girl with you when you shop too. You can pretty much find a ring for any price range, from a couple hundred to the ultra deluxe bling bling models.

There is no average. People spend $30 and others 100,000.
Choose something you think she might like at a price you can comfortably afford. Start looking at something around 1/3 to 1/2 carat.... Bigger is NOT always better - a smaller, better quality stone is more advisable than a huge, flawed rock.

It ranges from about $2000 to $200000! It just depends on how big you want the diamond to be.

probably way too much and way too big!

it really depends on the person, i personally do not like diamonds so my ring has sapphires on it. so it was less expensive but i LOVE it!

when i first got married me and my husband opted for plain silver bands!
