Look for a religion that helps you to find answers to your questions. Many times when people are looking for religion, it's because they have questions or problems to which they are looking for solutions. You need to search inside of yourself and ask what is this hole or void that you are feeling that needs to be filled. You then can type those questions in to a search engine and ask them. I'm not going to tell you what you should believe or what you should not, but I am a memer of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and because of that I have received answers to many questions that are not just your typical life questions about where did we come from why are we here on earth and where do we go when we die. Each person needs to decide for themselves what they are going to believe and what will make them the most comfortable. If you want more information you can check out http://www.lds.org and that will answer some of your questions about the church. I hope this helps and you are able to find something that will make you truly happy. As far as drawbacks go, there are certain things that are expected of church members that are not always easy to do, especially because some of those things might require you to change your lifestyle in some ways. It's not always easy, but it's always worth it.

My recommendation is to read a lot. Read history. Read about science. Read about the beliefs of all the different main religions. Know who Calvin was and How the Bible was put together. Learn about the differences between Shia and Sunni Islam. Learn the 5 noble truths of Buddhism. Learn about Confucius and Lao Tzu. Read some Plato and Aristotle. Know the difference between a Sceptic and a Stoic.
This is just a start. After (and while) you read these things, think about what you believe. Think about which belief systems have a morality that you agree with. Then you can make an informed decision.
Disadvantages: it takes time and a lot of thinking.
Advantages: You get a good feel for what it means to be human and you know you have selected based on what you really believe.

There are 37,000 Christians religions around the world. How do you find the true religion? By examining every one of them? Please let me give you an analogy.
If there was a news bulletin that came on and said there were fake bills being circulated around your town, what is the first thing you would do? Look at the money you have in your pockets? But would you be able to tell if they were fake? If you couldn't, you would take them to the bank and ask the teller, wouldn't you? And the way they would know, is that they have compared it to the original bills. The Bible - the word of God is the original bill. Here are the five ways -
1. Respect God's Word and Obey it - This means that the adherents are not hypocritical. They follow the Bible in their lives.
2. Realize that God's Kingdom is the ONLY solution for mankind's problems - This is what Jesus taught.
3. God's kingdom is to be "No part of this world" - By your attitudes and the way you live your life, you can stay separate from the world.
4. The religion that knows and uses God's Name - Jehovah is God's name.
5. They have love among themselves - They will refuse to go to war and kill others. They are united in their worship reguardless of race or color.
Find the religion that follows all of these and you have found the true religion. All the rest are counterfeit.

If you are shopping for a religion, you probably will find one, and still be as empty and hollow as you are now. If on the other hand you are seeking a relationship with the God how created you, breathed Life into you, and holds you life, and soul in his hands, start with the Bible, read the book of John first, read it through 2 times. Takes about 2 hours. Get a good English version, the niv, new living etc. Once you have read John twice, pray for God to open your heart, mind, and soul, you will be surprised at what joy you will find.

Shopping???? You mean researching....For right now, be a theologian and study all religions... It all depends on what your beliefs are. What do you feel inside?
There are hundreds of branches of Christianity. Do alot of research. Dont rush into it. EXAMPLE: If you werent too young, remember the cult "Heaven's Gate"?
PLEASE be care full to not to get into the wrong sites when you research any religion. Then there are 2 different beliefs in Islam. There are websites that claim to be Islamic origin. Many people misunderstand the Quran because of what the Taliban has done.
I have a VERY easy website that is true in Islam....
http://www.elazhar.com/aboutislam_u/default.asp
If you need a different website to order books to explain you go thru here...
http://convertstoislam.org/Free-Quran.htm
http://www.islamic-knowledge.com/Download.htm
Like i said, Do alot of research. Dont rush into it. Never rush into a religion just because of what someone says. Do ALOT of research. As for Islam, I gave you true Islamic places to get your information from.
Take your time, good luck!
peace be with you.

If you don't have a religion, then why try to find one? Are you a good person? Do you do good things and treat people with kindness? Do you believe in G-d and thank him every now and again? If you answered yes to these questions then why label your beliefs?
Here is my recommendation for you, read for yourself and study for yourself. If you really want to pick a religion very badly, then read it for yourself about all the religions. Only you can make the best decision for yourself. Asking others will only be what works for them. Example, a Muslim man saved my life, so I have thought about becoming Muslim, but that is for me. I can't tell you to become a Muslim. Just like you can't have anyone tell to become a Christian, or Hindu. Hey you may read about Wicca and become a witch! Who knows!? Only you. So you should seek for yourself, instead of asking others to seek for you.
Good luck.

Pray for the Lord to guide you. Have faith that he will.
I think that is the best thing. Maybe talk to members of different faiths about their beliefs and WHY they believe the way they do. For the most part, they should be able to tell you why they do the things they do, there may be one or two things that they aren't sure about, but for the most part they should have an understanding. Some faiths have websites they have set up where you can learn more about their faith. find the religions official website and learn about it. Request materiels as to what they believe. Talk to members of the clergy about their beliefs. Visit the church during one of their regular services. See how you feel about what you are being taught.
I don't know where you can start looking for information about other faiths- if you can find information that is directly from their religion- that will be the most accurate. There are many Chrisitan churches that are simply Christian and have no denomination- there could be a variation in doctrine depending on which church you are at. Just pray that you will be led to the right place.
I can't answer for other religions, but I am LDS- if you would like the correct information on my faith visit:
http://www.Mormon.Org
You can request copies of our literature and what we believe. You can also request to speak to local representatives and find out where you can go to attend a meeting.

Depends on what you're looking for....Catholics tend to be very rigid and legalistic, as do Lutherans. Baptists are a little looser, and Pentecostals may scare a first-time visitor as they do a lot of clapping and singing.
You're getting this answer from a Christian obviously, who believes that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

I would recommend that you avoid any religion that preaches false religion, tells you to be a Christian to avoid going to hell and laughs about the people that are going to hell for what they believe.
I recommend a religion that doesn't preach that you must avoid getting too friendly with certain people that don't join your church or make fun of the wrong kind of Christians or make fun of people in the news or make you feel bad about anything you where or think or read or watch. I feel most comfortable with Unity churches because they make me feel good to hear the sermon and not all tied up in knots.
One time, I went to a Calvary Chapel because a friend recommended it. I went in and got the creapiest feeling. It felt like someone was pushing me down onto the floor. I got out of their quick. Later on, somebody else from that church explained some of the teachings there and I found out why. I was so glad I'd left when I did. Listen to what your senses tell you when you go to church.
If you must attend a kingdom hall, don't get pressured to get babtised until you know what makes them different and are truly ready.
