My father in law who is 67 has gone from being a normal person to being totally paranoid, delusional, can hardly do daily functions (brush teeth, shower, etc) in a couple days time. He hears voices, does not sleep. This has been going on for 3 weeks now. DR's did brain scan, and all other tests for brain problems, all came back fine. Did tests for encephalytis, alot of bloodwork, etc. All OK. They say vascular dementia... But how could something this severe happen overnight. He can not be left alone, cannot drive, comes up with absolutly crazy things he thinks are happening... Could some other condition be causing this..

He was on absolutely no medications prior to this and was in very good health. Since then they have put him on a medication to improve brain function. We see him quite often and there were no signs, unless he was hiding them very well. Literally from one day to next he was normal to thinking that anything with wires or that ticks was a bomb, and more and more strange things....

Is it possible that he is overmedicated? Or the combination of medications are causing a drug interaction? I don;t believe that dementia comes on so dramatically without any "warning signs". My grandmother had something similar to this happen. She was on an antidepressant, anti anxiety med, and a few others. She began to hallucinate, fell down & got hurt, etc. The doctor finally took her off some of the meds and she became her old self again. I hope you find out what is causing this. Best wishes.

well, obviously it can happen, it DID happen.
my first thought would be what kind of medications is he on, did he take something otc that negatively interacted with those meds.
my second thought would be transient ischemic attacks, they would not show up in any tests, but none the less can cause similar symptoms.
and of course, this could have been coming on very slowly and gradually for a very long time, and you just didn't notice it until it got really bad. It happens.

Is he overprescribed medication? Sometimes seniors mix medicines that shouldn't be mixed, with severe symptoms as a result.

My daughter had a severe reaction to medication when the pharmacy accidentally substituted her usual chewable seizure meds with swallow pills. It was awful.

Chances are that you have missed the signs and this has been coming for a while. I can't say a whole lot with seeing this patient, but he may have had a stroke.

Something has happened and you need to call his doc ASAP. Get off the computer and call his doctor immediately. THis is not normal and indicates that something is wrong/

I am not a doctor or anything but do you think he could have had a stroke while sleeping?
