You can't force yourself to believe something. If you don't believe it then you don't believe it. And trying to force yourself in doing so only makes it all untrue. A lot of it does account for how you were raised. Believing in God is different to everyone and the type of religion they are. Honestly if you want to believe in something (God, Ali, Buda, whatever) your best bet is to read up on every religion that you can. Read their beliefs and what they practice. Then go from there on believing or not believing. Don't try to believe in something that you don't understand or can't see as real. There is no such thing as the "right religion". It's all about what fits your personality and beliefs. Myself, I believe in God the Almighty and that he is the creator of the heavens and the earth. I was raised in a Southern Baptist family to believe in God and to never question anything that happens because it is God's will. As I grew up I started looking at the religions of the people around me and started seeing that every religion is based on the same thing, a higher being that created it all. The difference, personal beliefs of the followers and what that higher being wants from his/her followers. Don't believe in God because the people around you do. Believe in God because you actually believe in him. If you side with another religion then that's great. Find the one that suits you....not the people around you. It's ok to be different from everyone else. That's what this country was based on, freedom of religion. Good luck, and I do hope you find something to believe in!

I say it was how u are brought up. If u were in a very religious home u would more likely be a religious person. But some people tend to go the other way than their family. Its all in what u think is real or u may just not feel his presence like others thats why its hard to believe.

The same reason I can't believe Jesus was divine. I just don't. Don't beat yourself up over it.
Blessed Be
Edit: A lot people want to believe. It's a nice feeling to know there is some higher being out there. Have you looked at OTHER gods? Maybe you just can't believe in that one. BUT there is nothing wrong with believing in nothing. I'm Pagan and my husband is Atheist. We're both perfectly happy.

I'm going through the same thing. Try talking to a relative or friend or priest who has really strong beliefs. It's inspiring and beautiful to hear about their faith and sometimes it helps me believe.
Try not to over think God as well. The human mind can't possible fathom all the details because we don't have proof. But the worst thing you can do is focus too much on it and let it control your life in a negative way...
Peace... carpe diem... and good luck :)

I was raised in the church so I am a firm believer in God... I mean, do you honestly think that the Earth and the universe were created by a "bang"... something of a higher power had to have created all of this! Humans just didnt form out of no where.. thats just one example of how you can try to start believing in something! Go to church, talk to a Reverand... if you really want to, then take the steps to doing so.

you just believe. What the heck are you expecting? Confetti to fall from the sky and Ed McMahon presenting you with a big cardboard check? If you can't believe then maybe you just don't want to believe, which may have something to do with how you were brought up.

it doesn't necessarily have to be the way you was brought up to believe. sometimes it's life. not all ppl who believe in god was brought up that way. if you truly want to believe that's something you have to accomplish on your own. don't follow others. i mean others can show you and help u understand but believe cuz u want to believe. U want to believe and u can't and that's where faith comes in. and that's what faith is. try to read some stories in the old testamnent of the bible and do some research. hopefully you find wat u r looking 4

For me, God was always something that I knew was there and around me. I never quite believed what I was taught in church but I always knew God was with me and could feel the creator’s presence. For me it is more rational to believe in God than not to, I have more personal experience with God than I have found evidence that God does not exist.

Do your research.
The bible says that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (aka the Bible). That means you can't make a decision to believe simply by what you've heard, but by what you've heard FROM the bible.
You'll never develop an understanding of biblical concepts without studying the bible. Its impossible.

To be a believer, it seems you have to pretty much start out that way, or having something happen to you that seems miraculous, or have a personal catastrophe for which you can find no other comfort and you have to believe in God or go crazy (although many will say that believing in God is crazy).
God, imaginary or not, can be a comfort to many people, but only to people who need comfort from someone who they can talk to but never answers back.
