Here's what I suggest: make lists of dishes you'd like to try or to make, one for main courses and one for side dishes. Then you'll have a list of ideas handy that you can mix and match. for example:
Main dishes:
Roast chicken
Steak
Fried chicken breasts
Chicken cacciatore (chicken with marinara sauce & veggies)
Hot dogs
Bratwurst
Chicken breasts w/cream of mushroom soup
BLT's
Grilled cheese sandwiches
Baked fish
Spaghetti
Tacos
Ham
Side dishes:
Egg noodles (recommended for anything with sauce or gravy)
Steamed veggies (list whatever you like - broccoli, asperagus, squash, brussels sprouts, carrots)
Roasted veggies (same)
Mashed potatoes
Baked potatoes
Twice-baked potatoes
Salad
Roast yams w/butter
Marinated mushrooms
Cucumber and tomato salad w/fresh dill
Pilaf
Pasta salad
Spaghetti tossed w/olive oil, tomatoes, & fresh basil
Now mix & match, and you'll have lots of great dinner ideas. None of these things are very expensive or difficult - trust me, I'm a working Mom and I rarely make anything that takes more than 45 mins, or costs much.

Chicken Nuggets
½ stick unsalted butter
2 garlic cloves minced
1 cup fine fresh bread crumbs
¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1 whole boneless skinless breast cut into 1-inch cubes
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
In a small saucepan melt butter with the garlic and let the mixture cool. In a shallow bowl or pie plate toss the crumbs with the Parmesan. Dip the chicken cubes first in the butter and then in the bread crumb mixture, making sure that each cube is coated well with crumbs. Arrange the chicken in one layer on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes or until the chicken is just cooked through. Transfer to paper towels to drain.
Green beans and White rice.

Hi soldier!
Purchase a crockpot if you don't already have one.
Any inexpensive meat will come out delicious slow-cooked.
I don't know what you like but you can have pot roast, chicken, and/or a cheap cut of pork.
Cook veggies separate or throw in the pot!
Add your favorite seasonings ( a little at first ) then re-season when almost done.
You won't spend a lot of time in the kitchen and dinner will be ready when you are.
Shop the sales and get the hang of freezer wrap!
enjoy.
PS thank you for your service
God Bless

My husband and I used to have the same "dinner argument" almost every night. I try to have just a few staples on hand to create easy meals, which may be a start for you. If you have pasta of any kind, you can create a sauce with butter, milk, cheese, garlic and seasonings of your choice (like oregano, basil or parsley) and cook up some chicken breasts - you can keep extras frozen for later, and a steamed vegetable, like broccoli.
Also, here's a recipe for Baked Ziti (which is one of my favorite comfort foods). This recipe makes a lot, so you can freeze half to heat up quickly for later...
1 lb ziti pasta
1 1/2 (26 ounce) cans spaghetti sauce
1 lb Italian sausage
1/2 cup chopped onions
1 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 1/2 teaspoons italian seasoning
3/4 teaspoon thyme
3/4 teaspoon basil
3/4 teaspoon oregano
1/4-1/3 cup sugar, to taste
3/4 cup cottage cheese
3/4 cup sour cream
1 (6 ounce) package provolone cheese, sliced
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
2 tablespoons parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 350.
Cook ziti according to package. Drain.
Cook italian sausage along with garlic and onion until browned. Drain. Return sausage mixture to pan. Add in spagetti sauce, sugar, and spices. Stir.
Combine sour cream and cottage cheese.
Grease 13x9 with cooking spray.
Layer in the pan 1/2 of noodles, 1/2 of sauce, all of the provolone, all of the sour cream/cottage cheese mixture, 2nd 1/2 of noodles, 2nd half of sauce, mozzarella, and parmesan.
Bake in oven for 20-30 minutes or until heated through and cheeses are melted.

Buy a package of frozen meatballs and your favorite brand of spaghetti sauce. It takes all of ten minutes to let this simmer, then serve over your favorite pasta. Dust with some Parmesan. Sides of garlic bread and you are in business.
Buy link sauage; we like the garlic type. Simmer on low in about 1/2 inch of water for about 20 minutes. Warm barbecue sauce or steak sauce and top sausage. Serve with baked potatoes and a salad.

Pasta. Fry some sausages, sweet chilli sauce and sun dried tomatoes in a pan while you're boiling the pasta. Throw together and viola! Best, freshest food. Takes about 10minutes
