Please don't resort to purchasing from a pet store right away. There are many animal shelters or rescues that could have young gerbils looking for homes. All pet stores get their animals from people who breed them regardless of genetics and health - for money. Not many people who breed good quality animals just sell them to a pet store not knowing of what will happen to them. If you even find a good gerbil breeder, you will find their personalities are much more appealing than the snappy ones you'll see at a pet store.

Petfinder.com was how I found my 2 hamsters. It's a great website! It linked me with a local shelter that specialized in small animals in my area.
Also, check with your local humane society.

You should actually go to petfinder.com and adopt one. Plug in your zip code, gender preferences, and age preferences and you can find one in your area that needs a great home.
Good luck.

And p.s. I really really hope you are not thinking about breeding them.
