.. the smoking ban. I'm from Ireland and we've had the ban since march 2004. I've seen several pubs close already and one of them was my local. Are the publicans feeling the pressure?

I didn't know that about the Native Americans. Interesting.

I agree. Tables outside are quiet nice.
But wait for the autumn and winter. Ireland and England have similar (****) weather. You will feel cold. Trust me.

My local is booming!! They have put decking outside with a roof over and tables and chairs/patio heaters. More people are using the local now as its great sitting outside under cover even if you don't smoke. Shame they didnt think to put this up years ago! They even have little speakers with the music coming from inside.

My family own a pub in Ireland and it is doing better business than it did when there was no smoking ban. Its the same for the other 23 pubs in my home town.

I happy that my parents no longer have to work in such a toxic environment but the statistics are correct over 90% support the ban and that includes a lot of smokers.

It is not about limiting rights, rather it is giving people the right to work in a safe environment.

And if someone goes on about how most bar workers are smokers, smokers get their fix through a filter, there is a lot more toxins going in the air than going into your lungs.

The local is suffering, people are not coming out as much. The smokers go outside, this splits the whole conversation pattern up.
If the politicians want to ban smoking, then remove the products from sale, worldwide. Yeah, right.

All politicians, Labour or not should be used in smoking experiments. Save some of those ugly minging Beagle dogs.
I would not be surprised if a demonstration against it turned into another Poll Tax type riot, but this time it will be with menace.

Most of the places in Canada went through this, one province at a time. First the restaurants, then the bars. I don't think business has fallen off much.

The only oddity - Indians are a federal government responsibility, and regulating bars and restaurants is provincial; so it's optional whether the province includes native reserves or not and they chose not to. if you go drink your firewater in a reservation bar, you can smoke. Ditto for smoking in Indian casinos.

This is currently a subject of a discrimination suit in Manitoba. The government will have to decide to apply the law to reserves as well or remove the rule entirely.

New Labour have done as much damage to this nation as any enemy could have wished for. By banning the smoke, it means fewer people will get out and share ideas. Pubs are already suffering - soon it will be the turn of New Labour scum!

In the mean time, more innocent smokers will be easy targets for sickos who walk around freely, despite (usually) being known by the police.

Recently they just did this in my city Arlington, TX but only places that have a certain ratio of food to alchohol sales, so bar bars haven't been affected, I don't know of any places closing down yet because of the law but I can't be sure. In other surrounding cities the law is all bars. I do think its sad and pathetic (of the smokers) that businesses have to close down because people can't withhold from a damn cigarette.
