Because we don't take care of our own. We're too busy sending money to third world countries that we have forgotten our own. And yes, they deserve much better than what they are getting. Try going into a Veteran hospital. It's really sad. If all these so called Movie Stars would concentrate on people in our own country like the veterans that would help some, but to be honest our politicans have to become more concerned to make a big difference. Thank you for thinking of our veterans. My father is as disabled vet.

Just because some yahoo puts on a fatigue jacket with some Army patches doesn't make him a Vet. MOST vets lead productive, usefull lives. A girl (15) from church went to D.C. a few months ago and told me about all those 'POOR, HOMELESS VETERANS' on the streets of our nation's capitol. I educated her real quick. There's a guy that stands at an intersection not from from my house. I got off my m/c one day and went up to him. Within 2 minutes it was clear he was not only NOT a gulf war vet, he'd never been in the military, yet he had a fatigue jacket with a 101st patch and a cammi boonie hat! I'm sure lots of folks felt sorry for that 'poor homeless vet'. Some folks can be suckered by anyone looking sad.
Go to your local library and get the book titled STOLEN VALOR by B. Burkett and have your eyes opened.

Be careful believing everyone one with a sign is actually a vet. I've personally disproven some of those signs. It is sad that those people are homeless but it's despicable that they are playing on the citizens who believe them as being veterans.
Veterans do deserve every benefit that they've earned. And they do deserve more than they're being given. But we are also getting those that we were promised. And I've not asked for nor gotten any, at least not yet, except for the GI Bill.

Here is my opinion, I worked for a mental health center and have met many veterans and there are many services available to them, Some just don't want the help. Disabled vets get a government check and medical and other services. My brother is a veteran of Vietnam and has cancer due to agent orange, He does not get a lot of money on his check but he gets enough to have a place to live, utilities, food, Etc. And Yes, I believe they deserve better, However, You can't make people except help if they don't want it. For most of them there is no other reason except that is the way they want it.

There are 15 million 'homeless Vietnam veterans.' Less than 4 million service members served in Vietnam.
Do the math.

As a population, there are no more than any other group. There is ample help if they ask for it, including housing. I have talked to hundreds, and they are doing what they want to do. If they are disabled, there is help and compensation. Because someone served a couple of years and heard a gun fired in the distance does not qualify them for a lifetime of handouts. I will be the first to agree that war plays with your mind, but help must be accepted. We are not all hero material.

A lot of veterans come back with severe mental illness from seeing their friends blown to bits...a large number of them end up on the streets....yes, they deserve better.

That is what happens to our returning Vets. Just watch when our troops come home from Iraq. They will all be kicked to the curb.
Just ask a Vietnam or WWII Vet.

Yes they do. These, along with poor children are most of the ones on welfare that cons always rail against.
