You didn't really give a lot of information here......
How old is this dog and how big?
How big are you in comparison to the dog?
If you are young and the dog is big and strong you need a prong collar on it. Even if you are a teen or adult and the dog is over 4mo old you need a prong collar. If the dog is six weeks old then you can use a smaller choke collar. These are muscular dominant dogs. They need to be under control at all times. If you are under 180lbs then you really should not take it out without a prong collar and muzzle.

i would use a harness on a staffie as most like to pull
use a fixed lead of 6 foot max preferably with a clip on each end and encourage your dog to stay close with treats etc

My Baby Blue uses one of the new-fangled harnesses that discourages lunging. He looks so very smart in it - and it really does help prevent surging ahead.

However, we use a standard zip-type collar (flat chained choke collar) when we do obedience work.

Those silly pronged choke-type collars are a nuisance and they don't work - at least they don't work on Baby Blue. I tried one on him and he looked at me as if to say, "Now Mommy, what on earth are you thinking!?"

A 6 food flat leash is a must. And if there is a leash law in your community, consider a 20' training leash as well - to give him a little more running room.

As for chains and studded collars and all that tommyrot? Shesh. Who needs to make a fashion statement when you have the handsomest dog in the park in the first place?

It's your choice sdotsnox. Try different ones and see how you get on with them. Pets at Home do a special leather harness for Staffs but you won't see them on the shelf. They keep them under the checkout counter - you have to ask them (sometimes the assistants don't even know it's there). It is a bit pricey but nice (about £50)

I used a harness on my boxer when he was a baby and then switched to a halti when he got stronger. Harnesses are much kinder i think anyway.

Depending on the age and temperament, choker/prong and a leash. Harnesses teach bad habits so avoid them at all costs.

we use harnesses with our staffs as theyre very hyper dogs and can easily get off a normal lead.
