Well you can teach them many tricks, plus you train them to go potty outside. They can tell when you're sad/depressed....so I'd say they are VERY smart!!!
Actually I just heard that a dog has been trained to DIAL 911 on the phone if his owner has a siezure and HE DID!!! He actually dialed the numbers, not a preset dial. This has been noted as true and he got alot of attention for it!

In terms of having the ability to learn a new task, associate words with meanings, and respond appropriately to a situation, yes dogs are smart. Each breed was developed to do certain tasks, so some may be better at learning to herd, others at saving a drowning person, but all have the ability to learn and demonstrate their intelligence.

If you ask me, they are too smart for their own good. But I still love my dog :)

Most dogs can learn one word, direct commands, with rewards (food, touching, praise) attached.
Our has shown a little EXTRA brain power, learning "other" and "again" and words that demand context and application.
They are also very intuitive, sensing things like storms, pregnancies, injuries, and many human feelings.
All of this, added on to their appearance, is what has made them the most beloved pets.
