It might be a good idea to do something catchy the 'audience' can 'join' even if it is only a panel of judges.
We all cringe at 'corny' songs but they are great at creating a cheery atmosphere.
So something like the Kylie Minogue song
I should be so lucky.

I will give you a star for good luck.

How about Killing Me Softly, Roberta Flacks version is nice and soft, or anything by Norah Jones and Katie Melua

the best thing you can do is just try lots of song you like and try differnt types to see what suits your voice best. but also try and get a really upbeat song to get the crowd goin and GOOD LUCK!

Twist in my sobriety - Tanita Tikaram.

Sweet song with a proper knife edge to the lyrics...

adding on to what crusha03 said, you can find the My Immortal that is just piano and i think violin. without any of the rock stuff in the middle. here are the lyrics if you'd like.

I'm so tired of being here,
Suppressed by all my childish fears,
And if you have to leave,
I wish that you would just leave.
Cuz your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone.

These wounds won't seem to heal,
This pain is just to real,
There's just to much that time cannot erase.
When you cried i'd wipe away all of your tears,
When you'd scream i'd fight away all of your fears,
And i held your ahnd through all of these years,
But you still have,
All of me.

You used to capivate me,
By your resonating light,
Now i'm bound by the life you left behind.
Your face it haunts,
My once pleasant dreams,
Your voice it chased away,
All the sanity in me.

These wounds won't seem to heal,
This pain is just to real,
There's just too much that time cannot erase.
When you cried i'd wipe away all of your tears,
when you'd scream i'd fight away all of your fears,
And i held your hand through all of these years,
But you still have,
All of me.

I've tried so hard to tell myself that your gone,
But though you're still with me,
I've been alone all along.

When you cried i'd wipe away all of your tears,
When you'd scream i'd fight away all of your fears,
I held your hand through all of these years,
You still have,
All of me.

then the ending is just her repeating 'me'. it's a really pretty song with the music and everything. one of my favorites from her.
