It is illegal for persons under 21 in the U.S. (18 in most of the rest of the world) to PURCHASE or POSSESS alcohol on their own.

In the U.S., as in most countries that allow alcohol, parents may decide what their children may drink under their supervision at home. If parents wish to give their child a glass of wine with Thanksgiving dinner, the law has nothing to do with that. However, your parents can not give your friends alcohol when they are with you.

There is currently a movement in the U.S. by a small group to try to change the law to disallow parents serving alcohol to children at home. So far, they have not had any success, and do not seem to have the numbers to effect any change.

In Canada and many other countries, that extends to dining out. In most provinces, parents may order drinks for their children if they stay at the table.

It is illegal for a 16 or 17 year to purchase, possess, or drink alcohol. Whether the law is right or wrong is irrelevant. You must remember that the person who gives the minor the Alcohol is the one that ends up with fines and possible jail time not the minor. The place of business that accidentally sells the alcohol to the minor can lose their license. Minors who drink ANY alcohol without parental consent and presence put the adults that they are with or the store that they use at risk for legal action. It shows their irresponsibility and that they are definitely not mature enough to handle the responsibility of drinking.

Now that the lecture is over. You are able to make homemade wine at home. The products that you purchase are available to anyone at any age at most grocery stores. It takes quite a long time to make and a lot of patience. I am not sure if drinking this type of Alcohol is illegal or if making it is illegal for a minor. I have made it (as an adult) and it was the best wine I have ever had. Again I do not know if this is illegal or not because it is still alcohol. The best bet is to check with your parents and see if this might be something you can do together. A science experiment. When it is done, you can all try a glass. If they don't drink because of religious reasons, you are better off just waiting until you turn 21.

It depends on the person. There are 16 and 17 year olds that are mature and responsible enough to drink, and there are 25 and 26 year olds who aren't mature or responsible enough to drink. Wine is part of a meal, meant to enhance the flavor and the overall experience of eating. Nobody should be denied a glass of wine with dinner, but those underage should definitely be denied the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th glass. There is a difference between enjoying wine with a nice meal and drinking wine for the obvious reasons. Wine is for everybody at any age, in moderation of course.

To me at least, it's "OK". It teaches alcohol responsibility when under the supervision of parents and in their own home and the 16-17 year old does NOT leave the house until the next morning. Here's the catch...it's not legal. If a snoopy neighbor finds out, if the kid brags about it to someone who will rat to the police, then the cops show up and probably Human Services. The parents get a citation for providing alcohol to minors, and Human Services might try to remove the kids from the house.

When I was growing up it was no big deal to have a small glass of wine with dinner. Nowadays the book will be thrown at the provider of the wine.

There were some researches that wine as long as consumed in normal quantities (1 glass per day) is healthy. But the thing is that young people have problems with setting limits so usually underage drinking turns out in excessive drinking and abuse of alcohol.
As long as 16,17 year old is aware of possible consequences and is ready to take responsibilities, use head when doing it and they set themself limits, its ok i guess.
