Actually, it has no effects on the body at all unless the red blood cells are exposed to certain chemicals in food and medicine or to stress. Some of those medications are NSAIDS (ibuprofen, advil, etc. i.e. non-steriod anti-inflammatory drugs), aspirin and sulfonamides. Also, mothballs can cause a problem!

If you see any effects, you would see:
dark urine
pale skin
fatigue
yellow skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
enlarged spleen
increased heart rate
shortness of breath

Subsequent testing might show:
anemia
hemolysis
increased young red blood cells
elevated bilirubin
low red blood cells (adult blood cells)
hemoglobin in the urine
elevated reticulocyte count
elevated LDH

Recovery is usually spontaneous though rarely, kidney failure or death can occur.
