Certain types of hitting are illegal.
Hitting with an open hand is ok.
Using a closed fist, or any foreign object (wooden/plastic spoon, belt, paddle, ect) is illegal. If a mark if left you can also get into trouble, schools are required by law to report any bruses or marks on a child.

IT'S NOT. At least not anywhere in the USA. Child abuse is illegal everywhere in this country, but different states have different rules. Some allow the barbaric practice of using objects such as paddle, belts and switches to "Discipline' children as long as only "Reasonable force; is used. As far as I know, only Minnesota has language it its statutes that address "Reasonable force." Any non accidental action which results in an injury to the child is too harsh. Minnesota calls it malicious punishment.

All corporal punishment should be banned, as too many people use it inappropriately, and can't differentiate between spanking and abuse. I also think parenting classes should be mandatory for all new parents.

It's been illegal to hit your kids since the late 20th century.

Generally it isn't, but it's a fine line sometimes between punishment and abuse....... and when injury results, then it's illegal. Then it's called child abuse. And face it, if you have to hit, or spank, repeatedly, is it working? If it were working your kid would get the message and not misbehave to avoid the spank.

Realize that there are many 'parents' who believe that they have the right to hit their children; and that sometimes this 'hitting' involves pulling their hair, sitting on them, pushing them down or into objects, squeezing them or hitting them repeatedly.

The 'theory' of spanking works only because of fear. The Fear of being struck and hurt, and the fear of being hurt if you disobey. What are you going to do when that child grows to no longer fear you? Become more aggressive, or use more force? Where do you draw the line?

Those who say that it's okay to hit a child as long as it doesn't leave marks need to get smacked upside the head. We are supposed to protect children, not hurt them.

It's illegal to hit an adult, so why would it be legal to hit a child?

It's not illegal to spank children. However, it IS illegal to beat them. There is a difference. A swat on the bottom is not the same as smacking them around.

It isn't. In my state, it's illegal for them to injure them, or leave marks that last more than 24 hours. But a parent could still smack a child across the face or use a belt and couldn't be held responsible for it, legally, if it didn't leave lasting marks or injure the child in any way.

Ever since the liberals decided that they can do a better job through their many government programs.

Most people aren't smart enough to distinguish the difference between discipline and abuse, so they conveniently lump everything into the category of abuse.

This is a key element is moving the authority structure from the home, where it should be, to the government, where it should NOT be.

IT'S NOT ILLEGAL TO SPANK YOUR CHILDREN.

What is illegal is to leave permanent marks such as bruises welts blisters... other then a temporary red bottom. The anti spanking crack pots like to make people think spanking is illegal, but that is simply their unpopular opinion, NOT LAW.
